When is. a good time to train.

I just brought my lilac crowned amazon home yesterday. And I was wondering when I should start training her? She is almost a yr old named Justice. Thanks in advance.

I'd recommend giving Justice some time to settle in and get comfortable before you try to do any serious training. Things will go much better when you've gained Justice's trust. For now, concentrate on helping Justice settle in with you and bond with you.

It depends if the bird likes you or not. My Quaker parrot took to me in no time so I started teaching him tricks the first day I got him. He had already learned a bunch of tricks after one week. It really depends. If he is scared of you then just let him chill for a little while and relax.

I started teaching him dumb little tricks like spin and wave. Very easy to learn for most parrots; you can find videos on YouTube on how to teach a lot of cool tricks.

Congrats on Justice. Cool name I love the look of LCA's too.
Most birds need a little time to adjust to a new home. Looks like Blueridge's Rocky was a little extrovert though!

You are training your bird the moment you make eye contact. Even how you approach the cage and use your voice is instructive to Justice. For the next few weeks keep things easy and monitor how she responds. Training any animal is based on how the animal responds. How fast you progress is up to the student. When dealing with Justice always respect her moods. She is an Amazon after all, and you will have emotional moments you will have to respect and back off.

Give her a few days of allowing her to simply see you eating your meals, watching tv, and allow her to get used to you being around her. During this time you can monitor her behavior and to determine when you can get going with training her. It might be a few days and it might be a few weeks. Some parrots who have formed deep bonds with another person can take several months.

Take your time, be patient, and Justice will become a member of your family-but it will be on HER schedule.
