Does your bird notice and react differently in some way? I feel like he's more 'gentle' with me when I feel ill, and wants to be near me more than usual. I wonder if they do the same with fellow birds of the flock in the wild.

It is very important to remember that Parrots connect to us on an emotional level and are very aware of changes in us...
So yes, when we are ill or stressed, they are aware of it.

With other feathered members of their social group they are well aware of the health of other members. Their reaction can vary greatly depending on whether they determine whether that member may attract a predator.
