Hi all I'm new to this and am concerned and need some good advice.
I bought a pair of lovebirds around seven months ago from a garden centre. One of the birds has a ringlet but tbh I think they are wild.

They have recently been mating and in the time I have had them only ever eat seed and never touch any fruit I put out. I am concerned about the birds welfare especially the hen as she seems to be closing her left eye all the time. It looked a little brownish but the light was bad.

Of course I am worried about her and will shortly be popping out and seeing if I can take her down to the local vet but maybe this is an over reaction on my part.

I would really like some sound advice on what supplements or whatever I should be adding to their feed or water to help them keep their strength up.

Any advice greatly appreciated in advance.

Thanks

The birds may have been parent raised and not hand raised. That doesn't mean they are "wild" - only not accustomed to humans.

Since you bought them from the same place, are you sure they are unrelated?

Fruit really isn't that big of a deal. Ya, sure, it's healthy for them, but the healthiest diet relies more heavily on vegetables, grains and legumes. If you can't provide a healthy diet relying on fresh/cooked foods, then your lovebirds should be eating pellets, if you have any available where you are at.

Short of that, can you buy plain seeds, no additives/colors? And sprout them? Perhaps the following thread may give you some ideas.

You should take the hen in to an avian vet to get checked out. She may have a sinus infection or infection in the eye. Can you locate any avian vets are a vet university near you? You mentioned vet but not avian vet... if no a-vet is available, I hope the vet is knowledgeable.

An avian vet would know best what supplements to include in their diet if you can't get them eating healthier.
