yellow nape amazon

Hi, a guy in my area is selling a yellow nape amazon, he says he is not tame but a breeder only, but he talks alot, do you think I could possibly tame him? even if i just let him out the cage and play on it would be fine with me, he wants 275 is that a good price for one thats not a pet?

My yellow nape wasn't a pet either.. but she is now anything is possible if you're willing to work for it

Don't get me wrong, I can handle Seminole, and I can pet her and so can others, but she's not cuddly like my sun is.. I don't think zons are by nature

The bird in question will probably be a handful, but you could have an awesome friend when its all said and done

275 isn't bad for a price.. is it a normal yellow nape? Or is it a mutated yellow nape? It would have a touch of blue/green on it's head..

Does that mean it's an exbreeder or that it's an immature held back for breeding or a unsocialized pet (neglected)? What age? What sex? that's important. Have you been to see the bird? What type of environment does it live in (in the house or out in the aviary)? Do you think you have enough experience to tame a aggressive zon ? It worries me that you ask if it can be done.A good choice for a pet? Not really but give me more info, i'll be glad to give you some insight.

A mutated nape? What's that ? i know of about 5 subspecies but have never heard of a mutated nape ? do you mean hybrid ? Blue Mutation ( is a parvipes mutation)?

Its a yellow nape with a slight touch of blue/green on its head.. I've only heard of it because my vet has one.. I'll try to get pics if the birds with him when he comes to check out my new ruby macaw

well this bird is male, he is 12 years old, no I haven't gone to see him, he was posted for sale in an ad, he said he only used him for breeding and kept him out in an aviary. I believe he was un socialized because he told me he wouldn't make a good pet, just a good breeder. He said he is only selling him to make more room, but honestly, the more I thought about it, the more I think I'm going to pass, if I had experience with amazons, I probably would, but I have never had one and just don't know if I would be good with one, as far as taming one. I have been looking for a bird for about 6-8 months now, but all the ones I have answered an ad to ends up being wild untame birds that were only used to breeding. another person I talked to is selling a pair of quakers and a pair of blue indian ringnecks, he said the same thing, they are not pets only breeders but I think I have a better chance at taming them than the amazon. I bought a pair of sun conures a couple of months ago, they were breeders and very mean!! they bit the poop out of us never thought they would calm down, but now they come out of the cage, they sit on our shoulders and even give us kisses!! sweetest babies now. so im sure i'd be fine with these guys, just not sure with the amazon!!

At 12 yrs old he's just entering his prime as a breeder, so there's some reason he's selling it. I think your making a good choice passing on this bird. Probably an expet who has been rejected by the hens, pretty common with zons.

If you are hesitant, don't adopt the bird. Parrots are wonderful pets, but you need to find the right one. I am sure that even if you pass up a bird you don't feel comfortable with, someday you will find a bird who will be the perfect feathered addition to your family.

When my husband and I decided to adopt a parrot, it took us nearly a year to find Kiwi. The rescue we were working with was really pressing us to take this sweet female Moluccan, who was still a juvenile and had no obvious behavioral issues whatsoever. As nice of a bird as she was, it just didn't feel right. Honestly, her beak intimidated me, we weren't really planning to give up the room needed to house such a large bird, nor did I feel 100% confident that we could provide her a forever home. We passed, and she was immediately adopted by someone else. Not even a month later we got a call about a neglected BFA who desperately needed a home. He was about 10 y/o, had obvious behavioral problems and needed some prompt veterinary attention. Despite all that, an amazon was really the species I wanted/felt comfortable with, they didn't seem to come up often for adoption, so we went and met him. Immediately, I fell in love and knew he belonged in our family. He took major work and dedication to socialize, but 5 years later, I wouldn't trade him for the world. He's not really "cuddly" (stepping up is about the mossy contact he wants) but he's is playful and interactive in other ways. He just LOVES showing off in the most hilarious ways and makes the funniest grunts and noises you've ever heard. He's also very mellow and independent for a parrot, which is just fine with me. I'm glad we passed on the bird who just didn't feel right, or else we wouldn't have ended up with our little guy.

thank you guys for all the nice words, I fianally made a decision about a bird. I decided that I really want a hahn macaw,The lady who owns the pet store said they would be a perfect bird for us, she has been giving us advice on birds and everything, we are always in the pet shop just looking around, she pretty much knows us now and I have been asking her about different types of birds for a year now. She will not have any til spring so I have some time to do my homework on them, it will be a baby, so I will be able to bond from the start!! thank you guys again!!
