Yellow-naped Amazons searching for new home

Yellow-naped Amazons in search of a new home. This "pair" has not been sexed. They share a cage and get along very well and must stay together. They are not hand tame. Their names are Charlie and Rosa. Located in Reno, NV.

Charlie came to our home first after his elderly owner passed away. Charlie is said to be over 70 years old now. He is in good health. Currently been on a diet of pellets and fresh food for the last 10 years, before that diet is unknown. He is calm and happily stays on a cage or perch setup. He is shy and timid of people. Will not step up on a hand but will sometimes step up on a stick/perch. He is not a screamer, mostly jibber-jabber noises and a few words. Rosa was rescued to give Charlie companionship.

Rosa is of unknown age. She has many issues. Health-wise she is healthy but has an air sac under her eye which is inflated. Our vet said while this can be drained it isn't in her best interest since it isn't causing her pain and it's not worth the infection. It goes up and down and it's just always there not seeming to bother her. She has been on a pellet and fresh food diet since she been with us ~10 years, before that I believe she was on a seed diet.

Rosa is NOT tame, and very aggressive with people. She will literally chase you around the house and latch on with her beak. Her previous living situation was not a happy one, we think they chased her with brooms or whatever to attempt to get her back in the cage. This is probably how she developed the broken air sac on her face. Not sure if she ever was tame or just traumatized by her previous owners. She will not stay on an open cage and will wander off and destroy. She is not a screamer, has some whistles and mostly oooohs and aaahhhhs.

Rosa has never hurt Charlie they get along very well and she has definitely been a spark in Charlie's life. Now that they are a duo, Charlie will follow Rosa off the cage and help with destruction. Whereas before Charlie just sat on the cage bored all day. Charlie has not picked up Rosa's bad temper, he's just the same shy timid bird he has been.

They share a large cage which will go with them. "Adoption fee" is the cost of the cage. Looking for a great home for these two. They would love an outdoor space where they could babble, play and be enjoyed for who they are.

How long have these two been caged together?

This might be a situation where they should be separated, in the hopes of giving at least one of them a decent future, and hopefully both.

I mean, a 70-year-old parrot? Are you sure?

They have been together for about ten years now. Yes 70 years old according to the neighbor of the deceased elderly gentleman who took Charlie in (they were going euthanize him due to his age, thus the neighbor stepped in). Charlie and Rosa both seem very happy to have each other. When they are out they are always together.

We are currently going to hold off on rehoming these two. Currently we are working on an aviary so these guys can have more space and outside time (especially in the summer). Thanks for all of your suggestions.

Of course if the right home came along we would still consider rehoming them. Here is a picture of the two getting into trouble. I forgot to mention Rosa also doesn't have much of a tail. We believe she likely lost it with her previous owner and their "parrot wrangling" techniques. They have lived a very low stress, healthy life the last 10 years. We only want the best for them and they are rather easy since they don't crave the human interaction parrots normally do. I just worry about the arrival of more little fingers in the home.

Aw- I hope you keep them if they are content with you. I love that picture and I love that ole' Charlie is still alive and kickin'.


Little fingers are a challenge but it's more on the kid/parent than the bird. "Don't touch the birdy cuz he may bite ya!" was the first thing out of my mouth to strangers at age 3 lol! I had tremendous respect (and reverence in terms of what that bird could do to me). She was uncaged almost all the time (except when sleeping or when we left) ..yes, she did occasionally buzz us when flying off her perch do to excitement, but each of us were taught to understand how to act from day 1.


That is not to say that I was never bitten, but never as a kid. My cousin was not so lucky, but that could have been avoided by preventing access- she was bitten very hard on the ear while holding the bird at age 5 or so...She finally decided she was ready to pick him up again about 25 years later :0 haha. BUT---- given the fact that yours are already are less needy because they are bonded, I feel like you could do this (only because you have had them for 10 years--- I wouldn't ever suggest a person with a new baby on the way adopt a new bird).. With baby gates etc, this could work...nap times/noise will be the hardest thing for both in this scenario (IMO).

Yes our birds are in a separate room and we have an aviary outside which is behind a fence. We do our best and teach the kids that parrots (like any animal) can be unpredictable and bite. Our 3 year old gives the birds treats and wants to pet them but it's definitely not in the cards yet. I've caught her with finger in the jardines parrot cage and have to explain things to her all over again. We are remodeling our house and when the jardines parrot moves back into the common area we will have to put plexiglass around the bottom of the cage to keep little fingers safe. As sweet as our jardines parrot is a big beak and little fingers just don't mix.
