- Yellow Crowned Amazon~Elvis
Hi parrot people this is a great forum! I just adopted an 11 year old yellow crowned Amazon named Elvis and while I'm quite the bird person, I haven't had one in quite a few years! I've read a ton of books and done my research over the years, but I am still full of questions :46: hahaha.
So, Elvis has been here for about a week and a half. He seems mostly adjusted to the environment (dogs and kids) for the short amount of time he's been here, but I'm afraid because he is such a picky eater. Apparently his past owners fed him nothing but sunflower seeds! (way too high in fat I think) and he is a big boy. He's been vet checked and is in fine health but I plan on expanding his diet quite a bit. We are vegetarians and eat mostly organic foods, which would seem even better for him. I make sure he gets his protein via nutz, eggs etc..and am handfeeding him his favorites.
He still has yet to want anything other to do with me. He steps up on his perch (that is what the other people used) just fine and kicks it outside his cage on his manzanita perch stand. He seems very happy with that. I just relocated his cage to where he can see more of what is going on because where he was before it was too busy a location and there was a corner. He seemed to start fluttering his wings in anger a bit, so maybe this will help?
When I chat with him he makes a little throaty chirp that reminds me sort of like a cat purring. He's happy, make sense? He does most of his talking when he wants our attention (when watching a movie etc..) When I went to visit him a few times before adopting I was lucky to hear his vast vocabulary. None of which he learned here...(cuz some are kinda sad!)
"Whatever"
"Oh My God"
Where are you goin
Why are we doing this
what are you going to do now
HELLO
when the phone rings, he says, "hello
Joe, bring me the paper
What are you guys doing in there
Why are you going to work today.
Do you have to leave me in here all day?
In a week he already added "STOP IT IRIE!" Irie is our dog, guess he hears us telling him to stop it lol. Well, it's nice to meet you all!! xoxo
