I wonder if something like this happens once in a while or it's a sign of a problem.
My DYHA looks and act normal but she pulled a feather from her tail yesterday, and it doesn't look like a normal feather.

I don't know how to tell if it's the last year feather or a new one. The feather is messed up. The shaft at the base is very hard and thick, almost looks like it doubled at the base. Only 1/5 of it at the base is messed up, but it worries me. All her other feathers look OK to me.
Should I get concerned or wait and see?

I'd wait and see there's no blood they were probably irritating her so she's pulled them out keep an eye on her anymore then get her checked out

I would actually save the feather and bring it with you to the vet at her next appointment of she has a trim or anything coming up. It looks like it was probably bothering her so she removed it, just keep an eye open for if she takes out any more.

I am almost sure she pulled her feather because it was bothering her. I was not concern with her pulling her feather out, I was concern with the feather being so weird.
I did save it.
I was wondering if it ever happens with birds that they get a weird feather growing out or its a sign of a health issue of some sort.

I honestly wouldn't worry about it. It's possible that while that particular feather was coming in, she somehow banged it / bruised it / disturbed it, and therefor it looks a bit 'odd' at the shaft. :)

As long as she isn't continuously getting feathers like that, it looks like a one off that was bothering her so she got rid of it.

A few years ago,Amy would grow a very different colored feather on one of her arms. It was formed ok,but was a real dark, almost black in color <nothing on her body even came remotely close to what this looked like> and she would yoink it out of her arm.
Even after one of her molts,it came back, once. I haven't seen one now in years.
