I am thinking about closing in our front porch and turning it into a birdroom/aviary. Does anyone have an aviary or bird room? What are some challenges that y'all have faced with one and what are must-haves for a good room for our birds? We will have central heat and air run to it and it faces East so plenty of direct sunshine until midday when it gets HOT here in Texas. We plan to move all the cages into it and have plenty of boings and stands in the rest of the house so we can always have their company while we are home and awake. The porch is about 12x10 or 14x12 so it is pretty roomy. Does anyone have suggestions, ideas, or pictures?

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
I've converted a bedroom into a birdroom/aviary.

All furniture is gone, electrical outlets closed with child-proof caps. Tile floor totally covered with thick painters plastic. Secondary layer added near activity areas and is swept daily, changed weekly. Removal of primary layer and deep clean monthly. Windows covered with child-friendly blinds; birds don't seem to mess with the slats.

Room is currently home to 3 Goffins and one TAG. Had as many as 6 birds. Four cages (one functions as play-stand) and 3 playstand. None of the birds are ever caged and are free to circulate. Very minor chewing to entrance door and some moulding. Installed a secondary storm-door with lower window and upper screen.

Unfortunately the smoke detector has a very short life due to cockatoo dander. Finally removed after endless false alarms and placed one just outside the entrance.

All are rescues- had to leave their previous homes for 'reasons', are still in contact with them :)
I have a rental - so it took me forever to figure out what I was and was not allowed to do. They will not allow any structures to be attached to the building- but freestanding...no problem.
One of my neighbours already fenced in her balcony to keep her cats from falling over the edge - so I am copying her style to avoid issues.

Almost there..and then looked up... somehow they did not build this part with cementslabs like everything else -> woodslats on the ceiling. So back to the drawingboard!
(even the greys will have holes in those before the day is over )
so....do not forget about those gnawable bits ;)
