Happy Birthday, Merlin!

Today is Merlin's 5th birthday! Its hard to believe that we've been together for over 4 years. I've been watching him & he doesn't show any indication that he's sexually mature. I've read alot of posts talking of male zons being hard to handle, but so far its been typically amazon moody things. He's good 80% of the time, but he has his moments. His worst behavior is flogging my head. He doesn't do it often, but sometimes I don't meet his expectations of a mommy/wife. I would like to stop this behavior, I immediately put him in his cage & walk out of the room. I think it is something I just have to deal with. When do amazons become sexually mature? Has it happened & I've just got a perfect bird? NOT :green1:

Happy Birthday Merlin!!!!

I can only handle one macaw at a time, two on my arms would drive me nuts....lol I'm cautious with the big beaks. When mine is in that mating mood he gets crazy and nippy... Having two going through it, no way....lol

Amazons typically become sexually active or frustrated. At 4 to 10 years of age. Be carful. I hear alot about. I know amazons get hormonal mine just doesnt. Well he will. Sammy is in the worste hormonal behavior iv ever delt with. And it's a complete change from is normal self. So expect it. It's nothing bad. It's good. Now you can tone his hormones down to a makable level. But he will come back at the end of the season. If he gets hormonal this year.

Now by putting him in the cage as "punishment" is not good. His cage is supposed to be a safe zone where we can't get them. But by putting him in after un wanted behavior makes him sence that the cage SUCKS. And why would he want to be in there. he will think he's in trouble Every time he goes in there. :white1:

Normally, at about age 5-8,all zons are different and you may not have an issue with it at all,If you do just remember that it gets better with age, i have many older birds (40+)and they generally grow out of it.
