Chattering Lory, 18yrs old (Sweet Pea)
I have to share a couple nite-nite storiesā€¦ last Saturday, Sweet Pea was playing on the floor at my feet with her hacky sacks, I was sitting at the desktop computer. The computer hutch has a printer at the bottom, and thereā€™s space inside the hutch next to the printer. Soon Sweet Pea looks up at me and says ā€œnite-niteā€ and then she promptly goes into that space beside the printer, and lays down on her tummy, closes her eyes and takes a nap.

Last night I was watching tv and it was late, and she was laying on her tummy across my thighā€¦ itā€™s so cute, she reminds me of a sugerglider, all flattened out, her body comformed to my leg. Well it got to the time I was ready to call it a night, so I turned off the tv, and her head immediately lifted from my leg, and she looked up at me and said ā€œnite-nite?ā€ā€¦ I told her ā€œyep, itā€™s nite-nite time!ā€.

I love my little Sweet Pea! These little birdies are so intuitive and cute!

Thank you, she is the most sweetest little girl! They can cuddle, on their terms of course, lol! You're so right --- they do say things at the right time, and are great talkers... I used to have a red lory and he was a good talker too. Sweet Pea started talking at 3 months old. That's amazing that your lory is the best talker of your 9 birds, wow! :) I think they are so attentive and they don't miss a thing!

Comparing the red lory to the chattering lory ā€“they both LOVE to play, both great talkers, chattering seems more loving, but that may be because itā€™s a female and our red lory was a male. Both very smart, both love to sing and make up songs using their names and other words. Both super silly. This may also be due to gender, the chattering spooks easier than the red lory did. Meaning that sheā€™ll see something and make a warning cry and take off, a lot more than our red lory did.

The chattering is much better trained, even potty trained because we got her young ā€“ she was just 6 weeks old. And we learned from our experiences with our red lory that we had for 5 years.

Louie is a riot! Yes, they do respond and I know they know what's going on, lol! Sweet Pea can tell when I'm just about ready to leave the house, and as I pass her room, she'll say "ready to go dear?" (My husband and I say that to each other when it's about time for us to leave) Also, she's always asking me "what's the daddy doing?" She doesn't like the housekeeper, so she chants to him, "bye bye". Sometimes when my husband and I are talking, she will make the "shush" sound. If I smile at her, she says "you're so sweet, yes you are". I love to see if she'll copy me, so sometimes, while holding her, I will open and shut my mouth, and then say "can you do that?" Meanwhile she's looking at me intently, and then promptly opens and shuts her beak... then we both giggle. I can ask her to close her eyes, showing her my eyes closing, and she'll do it. She's been our little buddy for the past 16 years, so she's very closely bonded to both my husband and me.

Can you believe we thought she was a "he" for the first 9 yrs, lol! Then she laid an egg, and all doubt was gone. Glad you liked the pictures. One of the things I think is so cute about her are her green legs coming out of her red tummy. Most of the lories I've seen or heard about are very playful, some more hyper than others, and some are better talkers.

The way we got into the world of lories was that my (then) 11 yr old daughter talked me into letting her get a bird, but I told her as long as it lived in her room and she took care of it. And also that she paid for half of the cost of it. I had had a few lovebirds in the late 70's and a good part of the 80's. Then I took a "vacation" from birds, and my daughter wanted the vacation to end, lol. So she visited a few pet stores around the area, and found a bird that she liked - it was a moluccan red lory that was 5 months old. The lady who owned the bird shop, also bred some of the parrots she sold, and the red lories were one of the types that she bred.

We were all enthralled with this cute little red and blue bird that hopped and rolled around, playing with everything. We'd never seen anything like it. My daughter named him Woodstock (after the Peanuts character), and we called him Woody. We had a ton of fun with him. Sadly he died from liver failure when he was 5 years old. A month later, we brought home a 6 week old baby chattering lory. (who we thought was a "he") It was still on hand feedings, 3x a day, so my husband, my daughter (16yrs old then) and myself all participated. The breeder was a great help in the handfeeding and weaning process - she lived in northern Calif, and we communicated by phone and email. I wish I still had her info, so I could get in touch with her and let her know we still have this precious birdie, who turned out to be a girl! My husband said he knew all along, because she talks a lot! LOL
