Today our 16 year old parakeet, Skye, died. Merry, her cage partner for 15 years was banging the water bowl...something he normally does when he wants his cage uncovered in the morning. As soon as I came to the cage Merry dropped down to Skye where she was in her little nest. I knew immediately she was gone. She had a stroke ...perhaps a series of strokes over the last year but got around pretty well after we redesigned the cage to be barrier free. I am not grieving about her at all for she was a happy active bird who loved to fly from room to room and considered any mirror anywhere a window to a place that held a blue and white bird who needed to receive a firm "talking to". She never talked but had a series of whistles and chirps to get attention and get some cherry ...her all-time favorite food in the world. Skye missed flying her last year of life and I can only hope that she is airborne once more looking for another mirror. I will be watching Merry closely for he is very upset that I took Skye away. But I am hoping his strong relationship with Sam and Gem will keep him from being too lonely.

Barbara I am sure she had the best of life she could have with you. I really did not know that parakeets live for that long. Good thing you will monitor Merry for a grief reaction. I am truly sorry she is no longer in your world.

Thanks all. I am worried about Merry as he tended Skye so gently this last year and he is also quite old for that species. Sam and Gem don't act aggressive toward him and he is a game little bird so hopefully he will spend more time out with us now.He used to like to fly around but has been a "stay at home " type since Skyes first stroke. We'll see. Last time I had the two budgies in to the vet he warned me Merry might not do well alone so I will be watching closely.

RIP Skye may you be free to fly

My all time favourite quote :
what the caterpillar percives as the end , to the butterfly is just the beginning

I hope this may be true for Skye and I wish you and merry all the best

I'm so sorry for your loss. I will keep you, your loved ones and your fids in my prayers. Animals ask so very little but give so much. I'm sure your parakeet is flying far and free in the next world. As DJ said the end is just a new and more grand beginning!

RIP Skye - May you forever fly strong and free forever and eternity.

Awww Barbara.

I hope Merry will be ok and recovers well with the help of Sam and Gem.

I was worried about Moo when Dewey my guinea passed away. They'd been together all Moo's life and he was nearly 9.

Turns out, a soft toy was an acceptable substitute for him! Poor Dewey <3

I can imagine Sky had a fun filled, wonderful life in your home. What an age.

I'll keep reading to see how Merry is.

I'm so sorry for your loss, and I'm glad she led such a happy, long life with you.

I wanted to share this poem with you, it's beautiful and a reminder that even though they're not here in body, they're always in your heart = ).

Thanks ...I have seen this before in several contexts. It was kind of you to think of it. I know several of you have asked of Skye's cage partner Merry. This morning, for the first time in 15 months Merry chose to take advantage of the open cage door and accepted a lift to my shoulder. But Merry is definitely looking for Skye in all the places Skye used to go before her first stroke. Merry doesn't seem blue just confused. I am watching him closely today as he is being much more active than he has been in over a year and he is a very old keet but he is really determined to check out every mirror and my garden window that Skye enjoyed time in even after her stroke. Fascinating to watch while Merry figures it out. More evidence of how smart keets really are.Gem is following Merry around and seems to be trying to say "I'm here still! Play with me and Sam! "

Barbara, I am so sorry for your loss, I know how much Skye meant to you.
You gave him so much love, a place of safety, he could not have asked for a more giving guardian.
Rainbow Heaven, has another beautiful angel seated there, called Skye.
You have wonderful memories never to forgotten, only to be treasured.
With your love and devotion, Merry will get through this tough patch.
RIP Skye

Sorry to read of your loss. 16 is an amazing age for a parakeet, you must have taken such good care of her. I am sure she has found a place where the mirror is always good for a yarn, the sky is blue and the Cherries are always plentiful :) Fly free dear Skye :smile019:
