Hello i have a question on mixing breeds :)

Hello, i'm new to parrots, after yet another friend getting an african grey i decided i had to join the ranks of parrot ownership.

I ended up settling for a blue quaker who has been hand reared and is very sociable and friendly, i have him in a 5 ft indoor aviary he is ten weeks old now and a joy to have.

I was browsing adverts today and spotted a one year old jenday conure and at 5pm she joined the family.

Will they ever get along together in the same cage or be able to be let out together?

Quizzy is used to being around, greys, amazons and quakers but i don't think milly has been around others, one thing i noticed straight away is her ear splitting scream although i did read they were noisy and thats fine, i like to listen to them.

Milly is in a cage i consider to be way to small to even keep a canary in so i'm collecting another indoor aviary thats wider than the one i have.

When you have a second bird that came from another area you should be quarantining the new bird. You can find specific directions for that in past postings. I would not be concerned about putting the two together for at least 1 month. If you do not quarantine you are risking the life of both birds from shedding viruses and diseases. You are correct the cage in the photo is much too small for a conure. They are very active birds and need lots of cage space. Please keep the birds in separate rooms, wash hands between birds, change shoes, close the door between rooms. After the birds have settled in for a couple week (2) it is very important to take them to be examined by an avain vet. These are but a few of the responsibilities of bird guardianship. I suggest you learn about the many hazards that are toxic to birds in a home environment. Much of this information can be found in the book Parrots for Dummies. Good luck and enjoy your new fids.

There really is no way to know if 2 birds will get along until they meet each other. Some willl be fast friends and some will never like each other. Jade and Ruby really have a sibling relationship - Jade is the big sister and Ruby is the kid sister. Max is the grouchy neighbor. We've put Ruby and Jade in the same cage from time to time, but we keep them in separate cages most of the time.

Not too late for quarantine. Then step one is to socialize both birds to you. After that you can look at socialization to each other. We'll help! Congratulations on your exciting new feathered family.

I can only agree with the wonderful advice you were given....quarantine is very important and so many people have lost birds through not following the process.

I have a sun conure which is very very close in species with the Jenday conure....the cage is indeed very much too small. They say the very minimum requirement is 20x20x20 but even my girls "small" cage (she has 2 including a huge play den) is bigger than that. Please consider getting a large square one with horizonal bars on the largest sides as conures LOVE to climb and need many toys as a sort of assault course to be happy when not with their human companions.

Aww poor bird! That cage is so tiny! I always feel bad when people put their birds in really small cages. Milly will certainly enjoy that new cage you are getting. After Milly's quarantine is over I would just introduce the two but not put them in the same cage together. If one happens to climb inside the other's cage I would supervise them while in the same cage. If the relationship between the two birds seems to be going well after a week or so I would then try to see how they would do living in the same cage. You are going to have your hands full!
