Please help!! My parakeet Tweety is not comfortable out of her cage. I've had her for 4 years. She is always scared and watchful of everything, she tries to find a corner in the house that she can sit undisturbed, when she finds one she stays there. she was always the shy and guiet type, opposite of her little friend spot, who's in spirit now. when he was around she would only get out when he would, and she would feel safe around him, but even then sometimes she would stay quite a while in her cage, as if she was making up her mind, while spot was having the time of his life outside. She would be at the point of flying out, then shed go back in. Now, she just wants to stay in her cage. id leave the door open, and she wouldn't even notice. My mom doesn't let me buy another bird, but maybe even that may not help her fear. she feels a little bit safer with me, but not enough for her to completely relax. she was panting on my shoulder randomly today, I confirmed it was not a symptom of illness because when I put her back in her cage, she was fine. she eats, drinks and poops normally too. could this be a psychological problem?

The panting is usually a sign of heat. Were you sitting in direct sunlight, or is the house a little hot? It can also be caused from hormones or sexual engagement. Perhaps she is busy trying to find a mate and nest, lol. Parakeets are usually quite nervous, that is not unusual at all. I'd say she is staying in her cage more because she feels the need to nest. Is her cere crusted?

When did you lose Spot? Because birds bond so well, and it sounds like they had a strong bond, it may be his absence that is affecting Tweety. You might also look around and see if anything else has changed that is affected her feelings of safety. Any changes can make her feel unsure of things, even if they seem incidental to you.

it was a year ago, she was always very quiet, and they did have some dissagreement, they preened each other for the first months they were together but they stopped for some reason. they are opposites lol, Spot would have a habit of pecking everywhere when hes happy, he would tap his beak on tweety's making clicking sounds, and sometimes, she wouldnt be in the mood, and she'd let him know. when spot would get too close , shed ask for personal space, lol. even though they had their preferences, they still loved eachother.

she still chirps once in a while, and eats and poops healthy. im just worried about how nervous she gets outside the cage.... shes curious but too afraid to explore. she did get her wings clipped, and im wondering if that traumatized her. she didnt bleed or anything though. it took a year for her wings to grow fully. and we did move to a new place for nine months, she didnt feel safe there , spot would make her feel a little safer. we moved again, she has been out in this place before, but like i said she likes to sit in a safe place and stay there. she seems happy, just nervous and cautious all the time. i just wish i could let her know that she needs to exercise !!!
