My parakeets are FINALLY trying & eating new things! And it's all because of a parrot

Sometimes I have to laugh and just be amazed how things work out. I have 4 parakeets ranging in ages from 1-3 years old. They are all very tame and sweet. Because I know that an all seed diet isn't very good for them, I have been trying to get hem to eat a variety of good food ever since I got each of them. But nope, they would never try. The effort always seemed hopeless.

None of them ever played with toys either until recently.

A few months ago I brought my Senegal parrot Cassie home. About a month later I noticed that my parakeet Jay Jay visited Cassie more and more. Their play cages are side-by-side and I always let them out during the day. (I work from home.) Anyway, I think they've become pretty good friends. Cassie doesn't seem to mind Jay Jay. She lets him go anywhere on her play cage with the exception of her water bowl. lol.

An amazing thing happened since Jay Jay and Cassie became friends. Because I always give Cassie a variety of foods each morning, (more than the parakeets get), Jay Jay has started to 'experiment' with her food and finally today I most certainly saw him eating her fruit and corn. This morning I gave her papaya, pinapple, grapes and corn in addition to her pellets.

I then had a thought. I stopped Jay Jay from eating the corn in her bowl for a moment. I put some corn in the parakeets bowl and put Jay Jay back on the parakeet cage with the others. Sure enough Jay Jay went over to the corn and started eating it like no tomorrow. Well, that got the attention of the other keets and they started trying the corn. Ohh maybe there is still hope! It's funny how things work out.

As for playing with toys, I think think the parakeets are watching Cassie play too. I've seen three of them visit her cage to play with her toys. The parakeets certainly have plenty of toys on their cage but maybe Cassie's toys look a little better. lol. I give her lots of toys she can pick up and hold. The parakeets are more active and playful than I've ever seen them.

"Monkey see, monkey do." Well, it works for parrots too. I often use my forever birds to help show a new rescue how to act, what to eat, etc. It doesn't always work, but, it often does. Remember they are flock animals, and will do what other members of their flock do. Good work. Keets are very difficult to get to eat anything but seed.
