My first bird was a parakeet named Buddy (passed away November 8, 2012). My newest friend is a parakeet named Chipper.
Chipper is very picky about his food, probably like most parakeets. All he wants to eat is seeds. I'm trying to get him to eat healthier food. The vet said that whole wheat bread and crackers would be good for him. So I bought him a box of whole grain reduced-fat wheat crackers, and he seems to really like those. But he won't eat fruits or vegetables. I was going to try to give him apple juice in a separate bowl. I thought at least he would get some more vitamins that way. Can parakeets have apple juice?

I'd give him the same juice I like, which is Martinelli's pure apple juice..it doesn't have anything added.

Would it be okay to give it to him? And of course, I'd only leave it in there for a couple of hours or so, so it doesn't go bad.

I'd wait tell the experts chime in, But I'd say NO on the apple juice just because from what I've heard, apple seeds themselves can be dangerous (I could be wrong) and depending on how the apple juice was processed, their might be some of the chemicals from the seeds in the apple juice itself.

PGP, you can remove apple seeds/pips from your bad list....that's one of the problems with the internet, you read a paragraph on someone's site about there being a problem, but none of the expert sites tell you that it would take over a cupful of apple seeds to make your feathered friend sick.....heck, before a bird ever ate too many, it would quit eating because it was tired of eating.....do you realize how many apple seeds the bird would have to eat.....

Apple juice is fine...apple seeds/pips are fine.....apples are fine.....

hmm...maybe just to be on the safe side, I'll ask a vet. I trust you, Weco, but I'm just paranoid that way!

I just wish I could get Chipper to eat fruits and vegetables! Picky little bird!
