Hello, so today one of my lovebirds laid an egg! From the best of my knowledge, I have a male and female and I saw them mating on the perch :) The female lovebird has not left the egg and nest all day!! Will she at least come out to eat? Male spends about 30% of time in the nest. I'm pretty excited to have potental babies but any tips from breeders would be appreciated as I have never done this before! :green:

The male will feed the female but she will come out for a little bit but will spend most of her time on her egg. If you can, after when she lay her 3 egg start misting the eggs daily with a spray bottle. You'll increase humidity and better chance of the eggs hatching. When she lay her 3rd egg you can candle the eggs to check for fertility. If fertile, of course you've got a male and a female for sure. If not, you can try to sex the supposedly male by putting your index finger in-between the pelvic bones, if it fits through it would be a female if it's closed together it is most likely a male. This can only be done on mature Lovebirds.

Thanks Mikey. The one that I assume is a male and is out of the nest I cannot fit my index finger in its pelvic bone. So once the third egg is out I can mist it? I live in Australia and it's very hot at the moment and breeding season.

The other thing is, they are only eating seed, but they have always had calcium block and cuttle bone available to them.

You should supplement their diet with fresh food right now plus other goodies. And yes you can mist after 3rd one is laid, but you can start misting after the 2nd one too.
