Sunny is so BOLD

This tiny Little guy is going to give me a heart attack one of these days. In typical Sunny fashion he escaped as I was changing his food/water/newspaper. That’s fine, I expect it now. But this time he dive bombed my head and landed on me and BIT my ear. The little punk. I jumped a bit, but kept in my yelp of surprise. The little devil decided that was an entertaining reaction so he did it again!

Normally when he comes out I let him fly around for about 1/2 hour before putting him back. This time it’s been 2 hours and he refuses. So I decided the food dish is placed on the bottom of his cage now so he’s got to go in to eat. The second I went to close his cage door he flew back out. This bold little guy is definitely showing me he does not appreciate being confined. I’m going to order him a play stand, hopefully that will keep him from pooping on the bed. [emoji1787]

Could Sunny have been fearful? I read to keep hands in the cage if birdie flies about, speak calmly and carry on with tasks.
That being said, I had quite the bite as a housewarming gift upon my chick’s arrival home. Apparently, that whole experience was not pleasant. But she survived! What instincts these little ones possess!

He refuses to stay in his cage. I had to get latches to keep his food and water doors closed because he was letting himself out. As soon as I go up to the cage he’s ready and waiting for his chance. I open the cage and step back so he can fly out. He’s not fearful, he’s just very bold.

I see! Oh boy, Sunny is a lucky bird! It’s not so easy making a home bird safe. It’s like having a toddler around. What a cutie!

l feel for you and know how those bites hurt. Oliver has bitten me a couple of times on the inside of my hand. He decided the second time the smaller pinch of skin he got would hurt worse when he bit down, and sure enough it did!

I know how uncomfortable those little bites can be after this morning. My first (and second) bite! I guess that gets it out of the way, but I’d rather not experience that again. In the mean time Sunny is taking full advantage of us being home all day. I’m at the point that it’s like whatever, fine. He can be out all day. Silly bird.

Thank you, he is quite sweet. He’s also a handful.

Sunny the Sun Conure (sept '18, gotcha 3/'19). Mr Jefferson Budgie & Mrs Calliope Budgie (albino) (nov'18 & jan'19). Summer 2021 Baby Budgies: Riker (Green); Patchouli, Keye, & Tiny (blue greywings).
Your home has a new Ruler. He just wants to make that clear to you, his subject.
:D

By the way, at nighttime I find my budgies will eventually make their way back inside their cage when I darken the room. Also, I have a little bit of success (TINY bit) of success at working with them (ie, pls step up, etc) in their cage at nighttime when they are very sleepy and relaxed. Since my green Jefferson and your green Sunny appear to be soul-twins, this might help you as well.

(Well almost soul-twins. Jefferson doesn't really bother to bite, instead he just stares me down until I figure out his commands.)

I was just watching a "Great Courses" show about birds. The teacher was talking about intelligence and made an offhand comment about intelligence not correlating with size since Budgies are amongst the Smartest of the Parrots, despite their small size.
