Hey everyone,

My budgie pair started breeding again even though their babies didnt leave their nestbox yet (they should be leaving it till the end of the week more or less). It seems like the pair mated more than twice today and yesterday, and i cant remove the nestbox yet.

I don't want them to be busy making more babies cause it can make them exhausted, especially the hen. Yet i can't stop them from mating, and if the hen will lay eggs, i don't think it will be a moral thing to do if remove the eggs.

What do you think that i should do?
Thank you!

Separate them seems like a likely choice...

How do i seperate them?
The **** is still feeding the hen (she doesn't eat food by herself, but only through his mouth), and the babies are still dependant on two of them - still don't eat by themselves and haven't gotten out of their nestbox, even though half of their body (the head) is always out of their nestbox, but they didn't jump fully into the cage yet.
It's only two babies for now.

The hen seems very protective towards her babies, covers them and feeding them (even though most of their food comes from their fathers mouth) and not aggressive to them by now.

Do i really need to seperate them in your opinions? And if so, how?

Thank you.

Yes if you don't want more babies you'll have to separate by taking male out (you'll have to restrain him with your hand or towel and move him to his own cage.) As the owner you must take control of this situation, even if it means separating birds in love.

Breeding is hard work and can prove to be fatal for chicks when budgies want to keep having babies -- often times they'll pluck, mutilate, neglect or kill their babies currently in the nest because they want them out so they can have even MORE babies. It can be hard to get them to stop breeding, so what many parakeet owners do is keep males with males and females with females. On top of this is that it is not healthy for females to continuously laying eggs or raising chicks, its so hard on their bodies and eventually if left without intervention, the hen will suffer from too much breeding and babies. Breeders usually limit their pairs to 2 clutches a year told, and most find homes for their babies rather than keep them for future breeding. Also important is making sure your two parents are NOT related, as related birds breeding (brother sister, clutchmates) can and will cause unhealthy young.

On top of that, when the babies wean you'll also have to separate them too or they'll also start to mate when they reach maturity, which is not very old for budgies!
