Does anyone know if there are any major risks to using well cleaned well aged driftwood for a perch/stand? I have some really great pieces that I would like to use for my new B and G:blue1:

I believe it would depend on the actual species of tree the driftwood came from, which may be difficult to identify.

There is a mention of driftwood perches not being safe in this article:

Bird; Birds: Safe, Toxic Trees, Woods. Safe Tree Wood. Parrots. Parrot cages.

Driftwood Driftwood is not recommended for a few reasons: 1. There is no certainty for the average person about the tree genus. 2. The ocean water environment contains organisms not to mention every kind of animal waste in addition to residue from ships. It is an uncertain environment. 3. Driftwood can have high salt content. Imagine all the crud that embeds into that wood.

Saturday I bought a driftwood parrot stand form craigslist in Sarasota Fla. The man I bought it from Used to use for his gw macaw but had no room for it anymore. He lived in a Small condo with a lania in the back but had 4 huge metal cages and a big metal parrot gym. for his female eclectus his two african grys and the hu ge gw macaw. He used to live and breed birds in New Mexico so I don't know what the wood is but it almost looks like a very hard pine. Hubby said you can't even dent it with your nail. and the gw couldn't chew it. It weighs a ton and was very interesting getting it down from the second floor and into our little honda civic. my little qp thinks he is on a huge tree which for him is true. :D Alison and Sweetie Pie

I don't know that I'd use driftwood from salt water beaches...but I've used some really neat shaped fresh water river driftwood pieces, for table stands/perches and I've never had any problems.

Good Luck!

I realize this is an old thread, but what did you do to prepare your freshwater driftwood for your bird cage?
Thank you, Shanna
