Good afternoon,

was looking to spray paint the cage tray (poo tray) and was wondering whether it is safe to paint with any spray paint since this does not get in contact with the bird? Can you help please? as it is extremely hard to find parrot safe birds in Malta or online sellers who deliver to Malta.

Thanks.

Are you able to get Rustoleum paint there? That is safe for sure.

If you can clean the tray completely and let it dry thoroughly, the urethane finish should serve the purpose you want, however, it may only be a clear finish, but durable.....it may take a full 24 hours to dry and possibly another 24 to properly cure.....good luck.....you would need less than a pint (.25 l).....

Is it a large portion of the tray or just a small spot? Kiwi's tray has a spot that's about the diameter of a can that's bubbling and one of these days, it's going to peel. I plan to just cover with duct tape.

If you do use spray paint, I would make sure it is a low-voc paint and that it has a good couple days to dry. If you stick your nose right to it and can still smell paint fumes, it's not dry enough yet!

If your tray has been after-market painted & that paint is peeling, you might want to use a hair dryer to lift the remaining paint, prepping the tray surface & spraying with your favorite Rustoleum or other brand, because simply using duct tape as an interim solution is likely to provide a breeding ground for bacteria and/or mold.....The reason I think the Rustoleum urethane would work is because it is actually a more durable finish than a spray paint & one that will find its own level (when wet), thus providing a better edge seal than a spray paint or a liquid brush-on paint.....though when speaking of better durability, I'm referring to abrasion resistance & not beak resistance, but then David mentioned the surface was out of reach of bird beaks.....

Hi Guys,

could you check the below please for me

http://www.rustoleum.com/MSDS/ENGLISH/249310.PDF

if this is good to use (and not harmful to the birds), it would be simpler and i think more dureable.

will be sanding thoroughly before applying paint so that all rust (or most of it) will be gone.

That's an acetone based spray paint...different than the urethane that your previous post mentioned, but it is suitable for painting the tray after the tray has been thoroughly cleaned, dried, sanded & primed.....spray finish paints are different than primers...finish paints are designed to be applied over proper primers & primers are designed to receive finish paints.....properly applied primers normally adhere better than simply applying a finish paint over raw/cleaned metal or plastic surfaces.....similarly, paints designed for metal surfaces or plastic surfaces should not be applied to wooden surfaces without proper preparations.....there is a different flexibility factor that can cause improperly prepared finishes to release & flake off.....

Since you're interested in using an acetone based spray paint, after having washed the tray & thoroughly rinsed & dried the tray, you might want to next wash the tray down with acetone to remove any soap residue.....be sure to either use a clean white cloth and/or use rubber gloves on your hands...the acetone will dry the oils out of your skin.....just don't hold the tray with bare hands or you will leave possible spots on the tray that will cause adherence problems.....

Let your re-painted tray sit outside for 6-8 days to properly dry & cure and at least 3 days after the primer application.....that paint is designed to dry from the surface down, but requires longer to thoroughly cure.....good luck.....

Thanks for the heads up.

was wondering, since this part cannot in anyway come in contact with the bird and he cant reach it in any way, could i use any paint available (ex hammerite) and ensure this is dried and aired properly before usage?

Hammerite makes a suitable rust preventive paint, but I would use their spray primer and an acetone wash, as I mentioned earlier.....the acetone is a fast drying residue free solvent that will clean most residues & oils.....I would use the same drying & curing times I mentioned earlier.....

Not sure where the Rustoleum products are supplied from, but Hammerite might be cheaper since it's a U.K. product.....

I've used Hammerite on a project in Canada several years ago & found it suitable for painting the light hoods on tennis court lights that were shipped the wrong color, but I won't say that your "any paint" would be suitable.....I have experience with both Rustoleum & Hammerite.....

Enjoy your cleaning & painting project.....

I have a cage in my garage that has some spots on the bars where the paint is missing. I'd like to get it all cleaned up and paint those bare spots. Will the Rustoleum be ok for that?

Yep, but you'll want to sand those spots real good, then prime with Rustoleum primer before spraying on a finish coat.....let the cage dry for 3-4 days...a week is better & you'll be good to go.....

Good luck.....
