Another travel cage question

Y'all were super helpful finding a travel cage for Charlotte, so I'm turning to you again for Leo.

Currently I have this carrier:

I absolutely detest it. He can't climb around on the smooth sides, if he falls off the perch he can't get back up, and the food and water dishes are difficult to impossible to get to. It's fine if I'm just taking him to the vet, but to go somewhere and stay for more than a day or two, it's just not really working.

I've looked at a lot of the smaller cages, but they seem so flimsy. I also think given space constraints in my car now that Charlotte needs a place, I need something that's narrower and taller instead of long and short. Something like this

I think would be perfect, but that one seems pretty flimsy.

So does anybody have any good recommendations? We're likely going to be spending a week or more at a time at my MIL's house multiple times over the next six months or so, and Leo needs a comfy home away from home.

Looking at the cage style and going over your Thread several times, I think you're looking for a 'Pop-Up' (quick assembly /disassembly) short term use cage. Strong enough to keep together while traveling and can quickly breakdown when not in use.

Well, the best solution would be to get a 'like' standard cage (smaller /lighter - think night cage) for your MIL's house and a 'Cat Carrier Cage' for the car travel.

Also, take a look at Mango Pet Products and specifically their Deluxe Traveler Stand! We travel nearly every weekend and that stand is wonderful for both over-night at a Motel or where we are visiting. Its two main pieces: The Stand and the Perch unit. The perch unit has a base, two perches, two food /water bowls and a toy holder (that we never use). It sets up quickly (moments, really) and you got the Parrot on the perch as you get everything else settled.

I used one of these when I go out. They make them for macaws as well. I like mine a lot and I know a few others with them. Curry has no problem getting back onto the perch if he hops off of it. I usually keep him in there until I get somewhere and then toss him into a cage like you had shared. However for a macaw I wouldn't trust one of those cages as they'd bite right through it.

I have good ones for my macaw and amazon already. Now I need to get one that's appropriate for more than a day or two for the senegal. The one I have is fine for the actual travel part, and maybe a day, but we're looking at 5-7 days at a time, and it's just not good for that. I'm seriously considering scooping up a used, full sized cage off craigslist and cleaning it up (there are several available right now), and sending it up this week with MrC when he goes without the rest of the human and avian family so it's just there when we need it. MIL's house is pretty much the only place we go anymore for any length of time. But I really do want a good sturdy cage for other types of travel as well. *sigh*

Hey, have you had all of these guys out for a ride (other than to the AV)? How they ride for an hour or so will tell you what you need to look at regarding a travel cage! Some with sleep, eat, sleep, etc... Others and especially my Amazon will dismantle the cage in the first half and hour. Still others will get motion sick ( will need a covered cage! ). That will give you an idea of what you need.

Buying a used cage and cleaning it up! Great idea!!

Leo and Goofy just love car rides. Thanksgiving will be the first time we have Charlotte out for longer than the 20 minute drive to the AV. The kids usually wind up taking Leo out of his travel carrier and holding him up so he can see out of the window. Goofy's travel cage is already high enough that he can see out just on his perch. I wish Leo's current travel carrier was more appropriate for more than a day or two. That thing is just impossible. The last time we were at MIL's house I wound up keeping him out on my desk top play perch the entire time except to give him access to food and water and then to go to sleep at night. He much prefers being able to climb in and out and all around a cage all day instead of being stuck in one spot.

I needed a larger travel cage, mostly for taking a B&G to the vet and into town now and then, but not to live in. I wound up getting a portable dog crate. It's not the best quality - the first one arrived with a broken weld - but it's powder coated, large enough, and I added a perch so it's just OK for a car ride. It does fold down for travel, and it's sturdy enough to stand upright if I had to use it as a sleep cage in an emergency (would maybe need different perch). I purchased a couple of stainless steel bowls that attach to the side. It's inexpensive, and I hope OK for a short term use. These crates do fold down for travel.

That's what we have for Charlotte. I got the 36 inch crate, but a 30 inch will do for a macaw as well. I have enough space in my van if I take out one of the middle row seats for the larger one, so it's all good. I do have a smaller crate for shorter distances for her, but she seems to be getting used to this one okay.

(This was during the "get used to it" phase, so she was just in a corner in my house next to her regular cage).

I used the wire crate to take Gus to the vet yesterday, and he freaked out. I think a plastic carrier might have felt more secure for him. I thought, maybe I can a put some kind of cover on it, but then I read that these folding metal crates are dangerous in the event of a car crash - they can collapse or come apart, injuring the pet or letting them loose. What do you use for car travel for your scarlet? I can see keeping a wire cage for in-room use, especially as they fold down for travel, but maybe I should find a plastic carrier for the car. Does anybody else travel with a B&G or similar macaw, and what do you use?
