I posted in the new members page, but I wanted to post here and say hello to my fellow caique owners!!! I purchased a WB caique baby, but he/she isn't ready to come home yet. :) The DNA sex test should be coming back soon, so I can start picking out a name! I've owned a Quaker previously but he recently passed away. My cage is all set up besides toys, but I'm working on making some. Any suggestions on baby-specific toys? I have a few foraging toys and a plastic toy so far. I've been snooping the forums lately and see people making their own toys. Is there any types of plastics I should stay away from? I'll try and post some pictures!!! Thanks everyone! :)

Very cute babys!!!:) Caiques love swings and boings [ by the time your babys weaned I bet she will be checking them out. Mine like balled up newspaper,A member here told me about toothbrushes [I break the tops off ] Toys made with wider plastic bottle tops ,dremel holes strings together with sisal rope. Toys made with popsicle sticks .They like wood toys made with thinner pieces of wood. Pieces of a box like a cracker or cerel box. Caiques love things they can hang from bounce and lots of foot toys .

Well my caique doesn't play on a boing in his cage, but outside of it he has a hanging boing from the ceiling he loves, I have multiple levels of perches in his cage and he loves jumping from one to the other and playing a lot, he is more interested in cardboard and food then anything so foragaging is his game, he doesn't play with lots of wood or anything else, but he sure does run around and do some funny things a lot, you are in for a treat!

Awesome! Thanks guys haha I have a boing in the cage now, so hopefully he/she likes it!! Where can I find grapevine? I've been trying to find my own perches too, but not quite sure where to go. Home Depot? Also, I'll probably put a few different toys in there and see which ones he/she likes before going crazy on certainly toys. The bottle cap idea is awesome though! Definitely will try that! How do I get a hole in it? Some kind of drill? Hah I'm more crafty when it comes to knitting and sewing, not drills and hammers!

Oh, also, I noticed you have those little bead things on the toy in the background. I wasn't sure if I should make toys out of them since they seem small enough to be a choking hazard? What's your opinion?

I know what you mean about the choking thing .Those toys are on a play stand outside his cage [so you can kinda keep an eye on things ] . Grapevine I find on trails or in the woods . You dont want to get it from an area that might be sprayed with chemicals. But I live in New York thats where I find mine . I like it because its bends. You can get a big piece and stick it through the top bar on the side ,then bend it down to the bottom like a water park slide . They can use that for different level like perches . But you need some real ones though. Theres a girl Wendy that has a online bird store "My Safe Bird Store " check it out. Get one of those perches too that helps file their nails. Untreated pine is a safe wood to use for birds.

The dollar tree sells wicker items that arnt coated in anything for a dollar a piece and they can be great to give the birds, pinky I like that toy:p, I hate making toys with popcicle sticks lol very tedious to me, I like making big wood toys and so on.

I go hiking a lot, so I've been on the look out for thick wood branches to make perches out of. So far, I found a good piece, but the bark is really flakey so I might just take that off. I'm not sure the type of wood it is though, so might not make it into a perch. I was thinking about going to the dollar store and just buying anything that looks like I could make a toy with haha Just wanted to see if there was a type of plastic to stay away from. Thanks for all the help!!

Also, is there a way to drill holes in the plastics without having to buy an expensive drill?

They like taking the bark of themselves [ let them have it ] Its part of the fun. I dont think a dremel is that expensive [check it out]. I dont know of any toxic plastic [just rinse it off throughly].

Just make sure any natural wood is safe wood and that you clean and maybe bake it. I would shy away from hard plastic as it can shatter, but soft plastic like wiffle balls is ok. To drill plastic I'd say a Dremel or if you have a cordless drill or drill press that can work.

I wish I could afford both :( I'm not sure which one is mine yet because I told my breeder that I wanted one that was more outgoing and that seemed like he/she could handle new surroundings and situations the best. I'm about to move next year and I'm always on the go, so I need a companion that can keep up!! Hah She will decide when the personalities start to show more.

I have a few names picked out, but I don't want to spoil the surprise!! I'll post gender and the name I picked out when the DNA results come back :)

They are just adorable! Congratulations! Smart move to have the breeder make the call: I certainly don't think I could choose just one!

FYI, we have a WBC for a month now, (he is 5 months old). He spends most times playing with stuff I made, rather than bought. Maybe he KNOWS I amde them LOL. I strung some plastic bottle caps on a colored cable tie, used another wire tie around a bunch of colored plastic straws, took and empty water bottle turned it upside down and drilled big hole in cap. Filled in with millet and tied to cage with sisal rope. These 3 toys cost me about 50 cents in parts and they are the ones he plays with the most!. He loves trying to get the millet out of the plastic bottle.

Awesome!!! I was worried that as a baby that he/she wouldn't really play with those kinds of toys. I'll have to experiment when he/she gets here. :) Thanks!
