I'm looking for a pet bird that loves to play, loves to entertain itself + others, a pretty bird, and one that's relatively intelligent. Conures and caiques both fit discription, but don't fit the same price range. I also hear the conures, despite their loudness, are a lot more cuddly than caiques. Why are caiques better?

I don't know anything about caiques but my sun conure is sweet most of the time. He's also cuddly and I think he's relatively intelligent. Also he is so beautiful! I love all of his colors! He is a little loud sometimes but generally a good bird.

I do know that most of the time caiques are quieter than conures, and caiques are described as more "clownish" than conures. Conures can be very demandingly noisy, but that can be fixed, so all in all I say just choose the breed that you are drawn to.
I have a black headed Caique (Skittles) and a Sun Conure (Sunny). Skittles loves to really play in her cage. She has toys everywhere and flips through them, on them, around them, etc. Just very, very playful. She whistles very well (currently learning the theme to Andy Griffith). Sunny, well Sunny chirps a lot! He is our door alarm. As soon as anyone steps near the door, we hear Sunny telling us we have company. He spends most of his day tearing up his birdie bunk. He loves to play peek-a-boo in my husbands shirt! The biggest difference is Skittles is a lot more playful and not as loud as a Conure. Some might disagree with me, and it could be that we have a calm Conure....

I wouldn't say that Caiques are better than Conures, just different. Conures are very playful, but Caiques are considered the clowns of the bird world. They really get into playing, not just "Oh I'll play for awhile", it's more like, "I must play and put everything I have into it". They even play dead at the bottom of their cage sometimes. Caiques and Conures are just two types of birds with different intensities. One is intense on playing and the other is usually intense on being really loud! They are both great birds.
