so I was playing poker like I do every Monday and I usually take Jazz. It was getting late and she was getting tired so she retired to my knee under the table to get some sleep. I was dealing the cards, lost my grip and my instinct to catch the cards from falling made me close my legs.

Well... her tail feathers got caught in between my legs and it scared her so she jumped. I looked down to see ALL her tail feathers were plucked.

I feel so awful but she doesn't seem upset with me. Poor girl.

WOW, I can't believe how many feathers came out! Poor girl, that's actually really great she isn't peeved at you. Some birds wouldn't be as forgiving. But it was an accident, and accidents do happen to all of us. Don't worry. It would be wise to keep her out of the poker games for the time-being :) Make sure she isn't bleeding and keep a close eye on her for the next couple weeks to ensure they grow back properly. If she picks at the area excessively or her behavior changes, a trip to the vet is always recommended! On a more light-hearted note, she looks quite funny without all the tail feathers, more like a chicken! :)

Yea I was surprised at the amount of feathers got pulled, I showered her with lovins and she didn't seem mad or in pain or anything. I can imagine it probably hurt hopefully it's not something that continues to be sore. She didn't bleed at all, hopefully they grow back with no problems. Plucking can damage the feather follicle and sometimes they no longer grow, is it possible I damaged her permanently?!

I almost stepped on Opal, my female budgie, once. She lost all her tail feathers, she holds a grudge against me now. Her feathers have grown back in, so I bet Jazz's feathers will grow back too.
Elvis had no tail feathers when I first got him, it was almost a month before I saw new tail feathers growing.

Hopefully Jazz's feathers will grow back without problems.

I have read that readily shedding tails is a very adaptive thing for prey birds. All that kitty or raptor will get is a bunch of tail feathers as birdie flies away, hopefully.
