Re: So we decided to get a cockatiel!

Update: toddler is feeling under the weather and has a fever. I was told Crickets throat and fecal swabs came back negative/didnít grow anything and that the vet was fairly sure she didnít have psittacosis but Iím going to call in the morning to be sure before calling the pediatrician. Iím not sure how those tests work, although I did search the forum and from what I can tell clean swabs would indicate the disease is not present. I just canít think of where sheíd have encountered some other pathogen as no one around us has seemed sick!

Re: So we decided to get a cockatiel!

I hope things improve with your baby! I thought Iíd just reply with reference to your question about weight. Berry, my 2 year old tiel, was 4 months old when I brought her home. She was about 78g at the time. Growth was slow at first, but then she had this exponential growth spurt at around 8-12 months, and gained a ton of weight. Today, at 2, she weighs around 102g, which is fairly standard for a female (at least in my own research!) Your little one is still very young, so Iím sure once Cricket has overcome this infection, the weight will follow. It was very slow going for me at first!

Re: So we decided to get a cockatiel!

Thanks! Yeah she’s not gaining weight but she’s also not losing it which is good since we are restricting her seeds. And she’ll be done with her antibiotics on Tuesday, hooray!

I also am doing that sunbathing thing that was suggested. we put her travel cage on the patio with us and gave her a mister bath.

The DNA results should be in by next Monday too, which is cool. For some reason she seems to like our toddler better than the 7 year old, which has our oldest pretty miffed...

Re: So we decided to get a cockatiel!

Congrats on her! What a cutie.

From the picture with her veggies and other pics, diet, she is in great care with you and treatment plan with the doc! As soon as she gets better the weight should pick up. I would lean to suggest millet as a way to pick up some weight, but concerns of her liver. A weight around 80g or more (when they're older) should be good. My tiel, a male, weighs around 100g sometimes in the 90s. After eating pellets for a bit, the poop should ''level'' out, not be as watery and be a bit more solid and green mixed a little brown with white (urates) in them, with some water. Eating veggies and seeds produces more watery poo, at least in the case with my tiel. Water consumption as well. When they've had more to eat, it is more solid and ''dry'' especially with pellets.

Playing with keys on a computer is really loved by them because they can try to chew off the keys! My old laptop is Baby's playground sometimes, since he has ripped off most of the keys on it! Of course I wouldn't suggest to buy a laptop just for that. They love shredding stuff, so maybe some blank printer paper or a toy that has paper dispensed just for them!

Re: So we decided to get a cockatiel!

We have been putting millet in with her veg to encourage her to eat it. BRIBERY! Also, happy to report that her poops look normal and she’s gained a tiny amount of weight in the last couple of days, and even MORE excited to say that she’s only got 3 more doses of clavamox before she’s home free.

We see her vet this Tuesday to get her microchipped, at which time we are also scheduling a second blood panel to make sure that the antibiotics cleared up everything. Hooray!
