Hi, I'm new to this forum and I'm hoping it will help me with some answers. I have a Goffin Cockatoo that my daughter rescued, but he was too much for her with a new baby. He is a great bird and love bug. I think he is about 3 yrs old. I work all day, but we have our routine and he knows he comes out at 8:00 each night (believe me, by 8:15 he's shrieking to get out) and we play or he perches. I've noticed lately, when in his cage, he sticks his head in his food bowl like an ostrich with it's head in the sand, like he's hiding. He also keeps grabbing his food dish and spinning it...all the time. I have given him new toys, which he plays with for a bit, but goes back to spinning the bowl or putting his head in it and sometimes when I go to get him out...he hangs on to the cage for dear life and won't come out. Should I be worried or is this just normal play behavior?

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Welcome to the forums, you have a varied flock!

Goffins are the "clowns" of the cockatoo family, and some of what you describe is play. They have an enormous appetite for attention and social contact, and a few hours daily may be insufficient. Do you give him more time on days off, and if so does he seem calmer and less animated?

Goffiins consider all aspects of their cages as something to manipulate, from food bowls to locks (Houdidnis!) and even bolts/fasteners. For variety a nice playstand with additional (or repositioned) toys may be a nice diversion.

How long have you had him?
