Oscar the CAG's diary

I hope this is allowed I wanted to make a diary thread to post updates as time goes by about my lovely Oscar, a Congo Grey.
So far we have had Oscar a little over a week and a bit. He is a very friendly bird. He was bought from a petshop where I felt the birds were overcrowded and the owner seemed like a mean guy and Oscar seemed afraid and would not let the owner pick him up He allowed me to cuddle him and held onto my sleeve as if to say please save me so I took him home with me. I could only afford a smaller cage but will update to at least 4 by 4 feet by May or sooner. I need the money.

We also have a Senegal Parrot, who is four years old. His name is George. He is perfect. Zero issues. Ideal bird. George is getting used to Oscar and vice versa. Their cages are 3m (10ft) apart as I was not pre informed about the quarantine issue. That was an error on my part I am sorry about for my birds sake.

Oscar gets a bit more trusting as time goes by. He lets me hold and pet him, takes food and toys from my hand, and he enjoys a spray bath when my senegal gets one. He spreads his wings and feathers and seems to enjoy it. He had one today.

I was feeding Zupreem and a mix of fruit/nut/veggie/bean but have started to swap to Broudybush which I mailordered.

I was told Oscar was hand fed but he will not accept hand feeding. This and how he was afraid at the pet shop tell me he was parent raised and I was lied to. He is also, although friendly, not 'human happy' enough to have been hand fed.

I still handfeed my senegal who was hand raised by a very nice lady once in awhile in case I ever needed to orally medicate him he'd make no fuss.

Here is Oscar today after his spraybath

Oscar gets more trusting every day. My mother's been visiting and he cleaned he hair and kissed and cuddled her. He's not there with me yet. I hope I become the favorite person. She'll be leaving soon.

The two parrots are getting used to eachother and show no signs of agression. The closest I've let them get was 1 foot while holding them both. Nothing really happened. Maybe one day, friends? My good friend has a Conure/grey that became best friends and even insisted on sleeping together and wanted to breed hehehe. Crazy birds.

PS---(the tape on the glass is to prevent the senegal who isn't clipped from flying into it. Works perfectly. Mirrors also have this. Trying to source those 'bird prints' so its a bit less ugly to look at. )

Oscar looks to be very healthy. I see the wings are clipped. That is good. Have fun with him as AG are the best!!

That 6 month old stage for Greys is so special. They are just starting to hint at independence. They are so nosy and inquisitive too. But they still haven't gotten completely past the "cuddle me under your chin" stage yet either (Well, if they were hand fed of course). Most of them are just beginning to make that connection that if they copy our voices, they get a great reaction: praise and laughter (and treats!). It must be the most happy time a Grey will ever have.

And that is why it should not be spent in the care of someone who doesn't truly love them.

Looks like Oscar might have lucked out. ;)

He sure did. Even if he lives to 100 I will be there to love him lest I be struck down before then. I love my birds. And birds in general :).
You can see him more comfy and happier with a brighter glint of hope for the future every day. he seems convinced now he wont be going back to the bad place and every day is better than the last. He is coming along well and trying to talk. He says hello and prrr and woo woo woo so far. The rest is gibberish but he is doing great.
