Green cheek conure
Hi
This passed Saterday I brought home my first green cheek conure. Her name is peaches and she is two years old. I got her from our local pet store. I was told she was hand feed. I have her in a good sized cage in our living room.

My question- how do I get her to come to me? She won't take treats out of my hand and she screams like crazy if I have to go in her cage for any reason.
Last night when I was talking to her she came halfway across one of her perches then ran off.

She will "talk" back to me if I sit next to her cage and talk to her but she will not come close. If I say, "be cuite" she will do little flips for me.

What should I be doing to get her to come to me. I would like to let her out to hang and play with me but I need her to come to me first.

She's not going to warm up to you readily, just continue with the talking to her and don't 'push' her into being near you.

Over time(And yes I know this is the hard part) she will be ready for you to touch her.

Talk to her, sing to her, and play silly games. Play peak a boo hiding under a blanket or behind furniture. Play stick out your tongue. Let her see you petting your other pets if you have them. Eventually feed her treats through the bars. If she talks or does any imitations do them back (except fearful sounds of course). Most of all let her set the pace. She needs time to get used to her new home and people.

It can take a bird quite awhile to get used to their new environment. Did they handle her often at the store? I worked at local bird store and we had a 2 year old green cheeck who had been there since before he was weaned. They called him jaws because he bit everyone. He was terrified of people, but with patience and persistance he became a sweetheart and went to a good home. After he got used to me being around his cage, I would open the door and coax him out. Once out and away from his cage he didn't need that much work. Just don't give up on her if it takes longer than you expected. Has the store had her since she was being handfed? Or were they rehoming her? Were they able to handle her?

I recently got my first conure as well. A gorgeous Nanday. She is 3 years old and the people I got her from never handled her. I've had her almost a month now and she is just now coming to me and allowing me to pet her. She has also started giving me kisses. I know its hard, terribly hard but all you can do is give her time. I too asked the same question and got discouraged when told just how long it "could" take for her to warm up to me. But she did finally. All because I spoke to her daily, let her out of the cage and just gave her space. Hang in there and congrats!!!
