I just got the most adorable baby gc. He's adjusted to his cage, runs back and forth at the bottom when he wants attention and we give it to him when he stops.

But for some odd reason tonight when he fell asleep we had accidentally left the lights on. So we turned it off and he started going crazy! He was screaming more like a startled or irritated screaming. We calmed him down, but we aren't sure what caused it.

Is there anything we can do to prevent it?? We're going to be getting a cage cover, but is there any idea as to why he started going crazy so we can prevent from doing it in the future?

Until you get a cage cover I would suggest a dark blanket to block light. He most certainly got startled. We throw a blanket on top of our babies cage and they don't get startled when they see lights go on and off. It isn''t the fanciest covering but it does the job :)

Just make sure it is a light blanket and leave some space open for air to flow.

I agree, he was probably just startled. If you have a dimmer switch you could dim it first then turn it off completly.
Other than that, see how the cover goes. If he still squawks just be paitent. Ignore the squawking and he'll eventually learn (and become habituated) that when the lights go off and his cover goes on it's bed time. :] Good luck!

Also forgot to mention, the store employee where we got Lucy said he has a nightlight for each one of his 5 birds, in case they hear something that could spook them, they could still see if something moves or not. Lucy's been fine with a small light.

Thanks so much everyone for the quick response! We tried dimming the lights as suggested he freaked a little bit but not too much.

We did purchase one of those hallway nightlights for him and it works perfectly thank you so much!
