Conure biting or beaking?

Hiya,

I have just bought a 3 month old hand-reared green cheek. She has settled in straight away and is very clingy and attached to me.

Only thing is she is putting her beak round everything including my fingers. I am not sure if she is beaking or trying to bite me.

When birds have bitten me before they just went for me but she is being gentle to start and then gets too rough.

So what do you think? Is there a way I can try to stop this?

All baby birds are going to explore and may start mouthing gently and then gradually increase the pressure. During this time they are learning how to use their beak and don’t realize the strength they possess. A baby bird does not know what pain its beak can cause. Don't let your baby nibble on your fingers, ears and toes this may encourage the bird and could continue throughout its life. If your baby does bite you, do not react by yelling. Be gently but firm saying no and blow lightly into their face. Offering a treat or a toy to your bird will automatically distract them.

It seems to definately be biting now. She is craving attention and likes cuddles but just keeps going for my finger. I have just been gently pushing her off and blowing on her face like you said. Hopefully she will settle in and stop, I only got her 2 days ago!

I would consider that beaking, not biting.

Instead, I would recommend distracting her with toys and treats before she gets beaky. Maybe even stimulate her brain by teaching her some tricks.

Remember everything is new to your young bird.
I reckon your bird is definitely beaking, and been inquisitive.
All babies crave attention and love cuddles.
Try distracting her when she attempts to "beak"you. Have an object in your other hand, wave it about when handling your bird.
