Concures in the apartment - Part II

So, I brought home a Sun Conure about a month ago and he's worked out perfectly. Not a peep but he'll shriek if he sees someone he doesn't know. I couldn't have asked for a better bird.

The thing is, his cage partner is still in the pet shop and it's a dismal existence being stuck in a cage all alone for days on end. Not to mention, I think my Conure would like to have some company and his original cage mate. BOTH, Conures were very quite the 5-7 times I visited the shop before and after I got the first one. BUT, my concern is that with the second Conure, I'll upset a delicate balance and end up with one or two screamers - which definitely would be a problem in my apartment.

I guess, to put it this way, I played Russian Roulette getting the first Conure and won. Should I play a second time? Odds (based on both birds demeanor) looks good but......

After owning a Jenday for a 2 years I added a blue crowned to the mix. The noise level more than doubled. Because if one sees something worth shrieking about the other one is going to join in. You can honestly not hear yourself think in my room sometimes. Also another thing to consider is whether you would cage them together or not. I won't say they always will become more bonded to each other than you, because I had two teils that hated each other, but chances are as with my paulie and sidney they will learn to live their birdy lives and lose a little interest in hanging out with you. This can be great if you're not able to spend alot of time with them, but does have its disadvantages. I'm seperating my guys when I move back home in a couple of months. I'm also going to have to go through some intense retraining to get them back to where they were.

I had a Sunday conure a long time ago (half sun and half jenday) ...beautiful guy, but noisy as all get out. At the time, he was too stressful for our household and we had rehomed him, but he was a sweet little bird.
The fact they are so noisy should be posted often, because people new to birds really do need to know it. So many people are drawn to their looks, easy size, and friendliness, that they don't always realize the amount of noise they can create.
Great birds all the way through really...I wish at the time, our conure would have fit in better than he did.

so my experience is one was much too noisy for our apartment living..... I could not have done two .... it may be one of those things you just won't know until you're dealing with it. Unfortunately, don't jump into it, if there is a chance you'll have to rehome, because it is so hard to do.

Well, let it be said that I was never a calculated risk taker. I decided to get the second Sun Conure from the same pet shop I got the first one. I guess I felt bad that after months it (she?) was still there and she was stuck in a very bare bones cage - no toys and never the chance to get out.

Both are very quiet - no screeching (yet) although the first Conure's a slightly territorial but I think they'll work it out. The new one is smaller and even before I both them was the more submissive of the two. I guess they don't remember they were cage mates a few months ago.

They are both gorgeous, and I hope that all goes well.

Thank you. The ironic thing is my parakeets make about 200% more noise than my first conure (Montrose). After I had bought the second concure yesterday, they told me she was the more quiet of the two.

Montrose usually makes soft clucking noises when I enter the room. If the TV's on, you won't even her him. The new conure (no name yet) does make soft squeeze only when Montrose is being territorial.

Does anyone know how long it usually takes for a bird to get use to a new cagemate? It's been about 22 hours so far. There's no real agression but I can tell it's still a little tense.

I had to wait about 2 days before my 'tiels finally calmed down. It is generally 2-3 days before things start feeling more relaxed, but it can take up to a week. Just make sure you keep a rather laid back pace when you're in the room; because parrots feed off of our energy. Eventually things will fall into place, I'm certain.

Hi my name is David and may I say that I was taught that Sun Conures as beautiful as they are, are definitely not birds for an apartment. Most Aratinga conures which your bird is are known to be screamers. I think they would sound off of each other. Just my opinion though. All depending on your personality ya might even start cussing. lol. I remember when I used to work at the store when we used to open up in the morning after all the birds were up, awake, and lively and they got going, man it was like someone was getting murdered in there with all the noise until they got it out of their system. Most Aratinga conures which your bird is are known to be screamers. I think they would sound off of each other. Just my opinion though. All depending on your personality ya might even start cussing. lol. I think an African Senegal would have been a better choice personally. It sure beats having 3rd shift Bubba banging on your door at 10AM wanting to kick your teeth in cuz he can't get any sleep after working all night. lol. Thanks for the read. David

Just and update since it's been about 2 1/2 months. Things are still working out well. Neither Conure has the morning or afternoon screaming sessions that Sun Conures are known for. The newer Conure is more vocal than the original but I think think she does that when she wants attention or want her cage door opened.

If I had to quantify it, I'd say the newer Conure gives a yell about once or twice a day. And it's not a loud scream either. Probably about as loud as a loud parakeet. My original Concure is loud when he screams but he's pretty quiet 99% of the time.

Overall, I can't see any of my neighbors having any issues with either Sun Conure. I think my parakeets were louder and more nosier. But they're with my nephews now.

I guess the morale of the story is to spend time observing the personality of the bird you'll planning on bringing home.

What have you named them?
Hopefully they will not become to loud vocally, at a later stage.

I live in a apartment and I just got little Alice. A Sun conure. i guessed if the apartment said I could have birds. I was good to go! Plus other people have dogs and things that make noise and they dont care if you mind.
