The new little Sun conure is doing fabulously! but my research has brought me across many frightening articles and also personal stories of things such as mites and other harmful parasites. I did however find a website which sells a product for various insect/pests that will potential harm your bird or even be carrying the mites, like cockroaches and even mosquitoes, here take a look:

King's Cages - Avian and Pet Bird Cages, Supplies, Food, Toys, Perches, Aviaries, Pluck No More

says its safe and everything. yet i would still like to know what you guys think. Would you use it around your birds? i would of course remove the bird and spray only the appropriate or recommended surfaces, removing the food and water bowls, but would you guys even risk it? opinions and recommendations to other solutions are welcome! thank you in advance :)

If you got your bird by proper means (ie breeder, pet store, rescue) you shouldn't really have any issues that need this sort of treatment.

I do know that 'cage protectors' (those mothball scented metal disks you attach to the cage) are actually very harmful to birds, I used to use those with my budgies til the vet told me about them.

I don't recommend cleaning bird cages with vinegar because that tends to attract certain pests. My vet told me to use a diluted bleach/water solution followed by a thorough wash and rinse.

Unless you have other animals in the house that may bring in fleas/ticks etc like cats or dogs- there shouldn't be any need for it.

That being said, I've never used that product. I have used "Rain" by Harrisons, but thats more for feather conditioning than any sort of bug spray.

Okay, if its not a concern then i will probably not purchase it unless we have an epidemic or future problem with pests, and even then ill probably consult a vet before all else :)

Thats your best bet. If it becomes an issue, check with your vet. They will be familiar with your fid and likely give you the best course of action.

Another suggestion... if you are lookin to kill potential mites/ etc in a bird cage, get a spray bottle and fill it with alcohol... the rubbing kind, but get the one with the 90%... not the 70%. Use it to spray perches and the cage. It will kill most insect critters and eggs by drying them out... leaves no toxic residue, and drys very quick... just DONT use it near a flame source or POOF!!!!!!..
