Rope Bungee question

I'm sure there are lots of different names brands on rope bungees out there. Can anyone think of the name brand of a good one?

I bought this one (I can't find the name brand) and after about 2-3 weeks this has already happened to it......yes Quincy has chewed on it, but even the initial install I wasn't pleased with it.

Was purchased at PetSmart....but I guess it's a cheap brand.

I have rope perches that are very old and 1000 times more chewed up than that. Most of the time they have a wire in them so I wouldn't be worried about it falling apart. I do not know the brand I use but they all seem the same to me.

We had a rope "Boing" mad of similar long cotton stranded material.
It lasted several weeks when Arika was a baby, but one day she really tore it up and we removed it for fear of her ingesting the fibers. I believe there are several warnings about long threads being ingested and clogging up their insides.

We tried a newer "Heavy Duty " Boing made from sisal rope which is supposed to be safer. That only lasted an hour. She had the wire pulled out of the end, rope rope slid down about 4 inches on the wire with the sharp end exposed. That was removed immediately and parts went into the toy recycle bin for future use. A rope perch made from sisal may be a better option and I believe the fibers are safer if ingested.

Of course she is a Macaw and much more destructive so her toys are showing more wear as she grows. We have varying sizes of java wood perches, and a few varying sizes of the nail trimming perches with the rough part only on the sides. I don't t think we would ever use the long thread cloth type again.

I agree. I replaced my cotton stand boing with sisal rope which my research showed is safer. Especially those for inside the cage.

I moved the cotton perches etc I had to the outside of the cage so that when Roux is outside the cage I'm around

I agree with moving away from cotton ropes (or any cotton toys) if you can manage. Some birds, especially chewers, may purposely or accidentally ingest micro fibers that can lead to crop impaction (lethal). There's also the risk of thread entanglement.

There are some wooden perches with a soft, almost velvety texture your bird might like. It's often knotted w/ twists and turns birds love.

Looks like the same kind of perch that my Pacho was tearing up just before she died.
I would get rid of it.

I want to also note that I love the rope perches but I only use them outside their cage for playtime. I heard there was a "vet" tape or something that can be wrapped around the worn ropes? any insight on that? Where the crap do you get it?

Thanks for the input everyone. Thanks for bringing up the concern about the threads.....my concern was the metal wire sticking out and poking him.

I will look into the VetWrap...it's listed that it's sold at Walmart...I will check there, and maybe the Vet.

Hmmm, that wire should be inside the plastic endcaps. I agree!

If you cannot return it and get another one:


Maybe wrap it again- with parrot-safe (natural) rope over the existing strands for safety?

(Hemp is really expensive, al least overhere, but I like the texture a lot better than the other ones - ties easier too)

So I got some vet wrap today....I wrapped the rope perch with it. Quincy often has a problem with new things....let's see how he likes it.

Hey that came out OK! Salty , thank goodness, does not chew his circular boing, but thats a good way to resurrect one if he starts.

My boys don't chew them either but glad to know if they start I have options.

Yeah I think this was a cheap brand. Within weeks the wire was poking out the ends..... Quincy seems to be chewing up everything lately. Let's see if he can manage to destroy this...lol

I get Skittles boings at a local pet shop or Amazon (and sometimes MSBS). I get the heavy duty ones, which are rather pricey, but they last, even with Skittles being the chewer that he is.


The ones I get have a metal screw on the end to attach it, I find the plastic ones are cheaply made and don't last as long.
