Cytrynka wears Aviator, albeit she's much smaller than Skitty (she's just a tad above 100grams). I was't ever concerned about the leash. Yes she's trying to chew one of the joints, which is stiff and gets into her body. I even reported this to the makers of Aviator, but they found it compliant with the design.

When they're out, theres a lots of things going on, so it's easy to distract them from chewing. Cytrynka can hardly be bored outside, and she feels quite comfortably (see my August POTM entry).

Re: Skitty gets an update!

@SunnyClover What size harness did you get for Ollie? I got the xtra small cause thats the one the recommended for 'sun conures'.

But this dang harness is confusing as heck! The instructional DVD isn't much help (and looks like it was made in the 1980s, lol.

I watched your video several times, but you were so quick with him that I couldn't figure out what goes where. LOL.

I can't figure out which is the side and which is the front. Its very confusing. I wish I had a small stuffed bird I could practice on. lol. But I don't.

I think getting me used to the harness is going to be tougher than getting him used to it. lol

Yeah, after I thought about it for a bit, I realized he will likely be far too busy to chew on it, lol. Its just I've lost a bird to flying away (my first bird, in fact) and while I did get him back, that memory is still with me (I was 11/yo at the time) and I'm 41 now. lol

Re: Skitty gets an update!

I just found this video on YouTube that is probably the best one I've seen so far (but Sunnyclovers video is the cutest, cause it has Ollie in it!).

It's AMAZING how well he has them trained in this video! I'm posting this link here for reference for other members. I think they'll find it rather informative!

Well I was going to to make another more clear video for you but since you found this one. Ollie is more used to being harness now. I like the just put it on method because it's not really pleasant any way you slice it and it takes seconds and they may not love putting it on but in the end no one gets bitten and no one holds a grudge and everyone likes going for a walk and getting ice cream with mommy. So yeah. It would be one thing if they be bit me or stayed mad at me but they really do neither of those things so meh.

Good luck with your training though!

Re: Skitty gets an update!

Well, you can still do that. lol.

I'm actually pretty torn, myself on what pace to go as far as training. I mean, he's not freaked out by it one bit, and I worry if I take things too slow he might think I'm backing off and then it may be even harder to get him to be used to it cause he'll think I'll back off. But I also don't want to force him either. I'm actually thinking of seeing how far I can get without really pissing him off. lol.

Given his reaction to it, I'm thinking it may be better for me to go at a quicker pace since he is obviously not afraid of it.

Re: Skitty gets an update!

just go with what he's happy to go with

also as a little tip from when I ordered the aviator spend some time just tightening and loosening it to make it a little easier to do. It was a real pain trying to tighten aand loosen it as it was so stiff when I got it

Re: Skitty gets an update!

A cold water delicate cycle through the wash also helps to loosen them up and make them a little softer. Do not dry with heat as it will degrade the elastic leash.

Re: Skitty gets an update!

Ah, both are very good tips. Appreciate ALL the helpful advice. Skittles has NO problem expressing himself, so knowing how he feels won't be hard to decipher.

But I think just going at a rate that works for both him and I is best rather than trying to strategize the session prior. You can't put a time on these things. lol. So I'm just gonna go with the flow. I don't see it taking that long to get him used to it anyways. I do know that I'm going to try him in it several times BEFORE I even take him out of the apartment with it because I want to make sure I have it on right and its secure before I leave the building.

I did hear back from the vet. She is not familiar with the "Aviator" but they have many clients who are happy with the "Flight Suits". I did look those up https://www.flightquarters.com/bird-...d-diapers.html Anyone know of these? They seem like they'd be harder to use?

The vet told me that she would recommend I get a second leash just like the one it came with unless I'm going to monitor him very closely at all times. Which is what I would be doing anyways. I'm not going to go out and do a bunch of stuff with him in the harness cause I don't want to be distracted. It's mainly so I can walk around the neighborhood with him and he'll be the center of my attention the whole time.

Re: Skitty gets an update!

Ehhh I'm not a fan of flight suits but all of my birds are potty trained to go on command/and or in certain areas when at home and on command when out in the harness. So a flight suit would be confusing for them because it's like a diaper thing. Idk it doesn't seem healthy to put your bird in a diaper and it seems tricky to get off if the diaper is full of poo. And what if you have your bird out for say 4 hours...does it hold 4 hours of poo? Idk seems like a lot to do a mid day diaper change while on a walk...
