Sun Conures vs Amazon parrots

Do you think Sun Conures have the best personality? I've watched a lot of videos of both on youtube. Amazons are funny, but they also appear to have a menacing vibe, like they know they can seriously hurt you. Amazons are great talkers, but I don't like the idea of a big bird tearing apart my flesh and living with that threat all the time. Sun Conures seem to be the most affectionate, cuddly, sweetest parrots of all. They also seem to be pretty intelligent, quick minded, and eager to please. I saw a list of the top 5 most popular birds. Sun Conures were not in the list. Why not? They were: parakeets, cockatiels, finches/canaries, love birds, and african greys. I've had parakeets and cockatiels. Cockatiels seem vastly more intelligent than parakeets, but Sun Conures seem significantly more intelligent than cockatiels.

Sun Conures can be a very noisy bird. Yes, they are beautiful, intelligent and comical. But they can and do squawk, squeal and also can put a hurting on your finger. I held one once at a pet shop and the Sun Conure decided to latch onto my finger, breaking the skin and drawing blood. The Shop owner hand to come over to help pry his or her beak off my finger because the bird wasn't letting go.

It was my own fault, they had the bird on a perch and it was leaning over like it wanted to be picked up. It was actually luring me in for the kill. The shop owner said it only like women. I got that. But this is not all Sun Conures and the same can be said for most any species of birds. I've had Cockatiels do the same thing.

I would like to add, that I own a Senegal Parrot, which is one of the favorite species that are touted to be so quiet that they are considered apartment birds. But let me tell you, if I lived in an apartment, I would definately be kicked out once Tiki let loose with a few of her squawks & squeals. Fortunately, it's not an all day occurance, it's mainly in the morning first thing or during the day if she's left alone too long.

I have only worked with conures to rehabilitate and rehome them so I can't really comment on then in any depth. However, I love Amazons. Charlie is a complete character, and has the wildest personality of all my birds except bubba the macaw.

The sun conure call is like finger nails on a chalk board to most. Of the conures, I prefer the nanday, or black capped.

My Sunnie is louder than my Amazon, and my GCC is more painful of a biter, My amazon is quiet and does not bite hard at all, the conures hurt more, so this idea that an amazon knows it can hurt you is nonsense, as birds do not want to bite unless threatened. It is just not a natural habit for them in the wild to bite. Training and trust are the keys to a good relationship with any bird, and it takes time no matter what kind of bird you choose(or what ever kind that chooses you)

The main thing to consider is the noise levels and what is acceptable where you live, Sunnies do not make the best apartment/condo pets as they are loud and bothersome to people who dont want to hear SQUAWWWWWWK all day long. Thus leading to another bird needing rehomed.

I'm gonna be blunt with you.
If your already worried about an amazons bite then it's not for you.
There one type of personality you must have to care for these "gental" giants.
I have a yellow crowned. I love him. He amazes me everyday.
Amazons are really MENT for the outgoing person. And amazons learn to discipline with there beak. It's the second most rehomed bird out there as well 1 outta 3 zons will see 5 diffrent homes in there lifetime. Here's were it gets worse. 2/3 in a clutch, 2 will be rehomed at maturity.
Hormones. They can hurt. I respect the amazon breed ALOT!! and try to prepare anyone for the worst. If you feel you can Handel a crazy 2 year old child at moments then you fit for the job. Larger amazons bite is he worste of the kingdom pressure wise. Harder than a macaw. Yellow crowns are known to be the loudest amazon. When they want left alone you leave em alone. Don't push em. Well you can but he will bite you.
Territorial. Extremely nuts with males and even females.
Only during the mating season. They are not cage bird either. They require minimum 4 hours out. Unless a huge cage. But still amazon tend to obtain behavior problems when confined to a cage.
If you do get one. Maybe a lilac crowned is best. Or even yellow crowned
There more civil. Even tempared
Look at the cons of this bird first then you can Review the pros.

If it's your first bird a conure would be best. My rescue does not even adopt out zons to first time parrot owners.

But if everything works out. Years of companionship will offered. Amazons are an extremely bondable bird. They LOVE there human.

Oh conures are louder on a frequent scale. Rated the noisiest bird outta the kingdom.
But I have 2 haha. I love conure and there screams.
