It's 9 o clock and our vet is closed. our hen is laying her first egg and we don't know if she's ok. she's crying and we see a bloody (maybe membrane covered) mass going in and out. we're trying to find some info before we bring a new vet into the picture and stress her out more with a car ride. it's only been going on for ten or so minutes. what are warning signs that something is wrong??

I've never seen blood when a bird layed an egg! I'd try to find a 24 hour vet clinic if I were you! It sounds potentially very serious.

she's a 10 yr old solomn island eclectus. she's my dad's bird and hates me, so I can't handle her to take a picture of underneath her. her crying has slowed down, she's perching and pacing and swishing her tail

Poor girl! Where is your dad? Does he know? Can you catch her in a towel, or chase her into a travel cage to take her to the vet?

It sounds like the egg may have broken inside of her! I'd be concerned about internal bleeding. The egg shell probably cut her insides. It's generally recommended that you take a bird to the vet ASAP when there is blood, because they can bleed to death very easily. Since you can't see the source of the bleeding, you can't know for sure whether it has stopped or not.

This seems like an emergency to me! Please don't wait too long. With things like this, it's better to be safe than sorry.

I just posted not along ago about the necessity items in case of this happening! Vegetable oil, mineral oil, etc. to lubricate! Holding over steam with the cloca facing the steam. Make sure it's not too hot when your doing it so it doesn't burn her. I hope you brought her to the vet cause internal bleeding can be pretty devastating. She can recover, but should NOT let her try to nest at all period! Cause the next time it can be fatal to her after this incident. You should check her cloca area too, sometimes part of their insides would fall out and you must act quickly by pushing it back in asap otherwise it will dry up and she will have tissue damage, that's when she would need surgery. It's not a pretty sight and they will try to bite you, but it has to be done....Let us know how she's doing!!!

for all those wondering: we ended up taking her to the vet. she had formed a shell and it cracked, but didn't break inside her. they had to empty the egg out and pull it out. she's doing fine now and is on antibiotics. blood work said calcium levels were on the low end of normal.

we don't give her things to nest in or with, but she's in love with my dad so if he touches her at all her hormones rage, and she won't let any one else touch her

I thought as much but didn't speculate as you were going to the Vet in any case, so pleased things have worked out. I trust your vet has advised you on what is the best to avoid this happening again.:D
