So i currently own a 2 month old eclectus and he is getting bigger and he almost has all of his feathers. But since he is getting older I'm scared about weaning him. i just started feeding him 2 times a day instead of 3 but i don't want to hurt him or stunt his growth or make him have behavior issues by weaning him to early and i know they wean themselves but i just don't want to mess up. I have done my fair share of research but i want some advise if you could give me some advise on weaning and feeding him that would be great. THANKS:emoticonc

Let your Ekki set the pace. If he's not ready to go down to 2 hand feedings, then don't push him, instead keep offering him 3 feeding. He may not eat it all, or he may refuse, so just listen to him, and you won't have any problems.

EVERY bird WILL wean. :) Don't rush, be patient, take it one day at a time, and monitor his weight.

Now is the BEST time to introduce your baby to lots and lots of fresh veggies, fruits and sprouts.

they will let you know when they are done :)
If they are screaming/calling for it, they aren't weaned yet.

my boy was eating a lot of fresh foods and would still call in the AM and PM for a good few weeks. He heard me in the kitchen making it so he would start calling for it.
One morning he didnt get excited and when i went to feed him he simply refused. i tried again just in case in the evening and he didnt want anything to do with it. He let me know he was done.

i wasn't comfortable with the whole hand feeding experience though, so i am only familiar with the 2 feedings a day while still getting their fill from regular food.

good luck!

My baby is just over three months and has his formula once a day now. He has fruits and veges throughout the day. They definitely cry when they are hungry so you will pick up on it so always listen to those hunger crys. All the best with your new baby bird :)

Please don't be in any rush to wean, I have a boy that will be 5 months tomorrow and still takes a small comfort feeding at night. He gets plenty of fresh organic fruits, veggies, sprouts, grains and such. I am a vegetarian myself so there are always tons of options at my house and he eats like a pig believe me. But I firmly believe if they cry, beg for it, I feed, even if most of it is wasted it is more important that they feel comforted and safe. In the wild the female will stop feeding her young once they leave the nest, she is typically getting ready to start another brood. It then falls onto the male to teach the new fledglings where to find food but he will continue to feed them if they beg. Some take longer than others and there should never be a "set" time that you just take that feeding away. Let the baby tell you when he or she is ready. I am also big on letting a baby bird become completely fledged. I mean fly really good before you think of clipping. I understand that some people feel because of their household or circumstances the need to clip and I respect that however none of mine are clipped now. One of my girls came to me at 6 months old and was already clipped, she is the one I have had the most confidence issues with. Getting her used to me, my house and anything new was a much slower process than the ones I have that have never been clipped.
