Drop it

I'm pretty proud of Lincoln right now.

I house a rat in the same room as I have Lincoln, they don't have any interaction and Lincoln can't actually get to the rat cage since it's on top my dresser but sometimes my rat kicks some of the bedding (aspen shavings) out of the cage into the ground. I've already confirmed with my vet that there's no illnesses that Lincoln could get from my rat so I'm not too entirely worried about it but Lincoln loves chewing on the wood shavings for whatever reason. I don't like him doing this though so I tried teacher him to drop it. If he got ahold of a shaving I'd ask him to drop it and hold my hand under his beak and he wouldn't get a treat until he dropped it. I didn't expect this to go very well but he picked it up after two tries on separate days. What a smart birdy. He got another shaving today and right when I asked him to drop it, he did so immediately

That is an excellent behavior to teach a bird! Clever boy, Lincoln! I know I'm overly paranoid but I wouldn't think those shavings would be too healthy. Teaching Lincoln, "drop it" was a great idea.

Ha ha well done Lincoln so if he wants a treat he goes find some wood shavings eh?

He still very much prefers almonds to the wood shavings. I'm not sure if he just crunches them up and drops them or actually swallows them but I rather it not become a problem in any way

Isn't it just amazing? now,who would EVER think ( except us parronts) that a silly little feathery,beaky,footsie,creature could "understand"? ( It is obvious to me,after living with these silly animals for 30 years) that they DO indeed,comprehend what we say to tell...from a big 'ol Mac to a tiny little finch or budgie...boggles the mind!
