Casper a blue fronted Amazon
Casper, our BFA loves having his neck tickled but afterwards he has a good scratch which does leave a bit of dandruff on Margaret. Margaret had a bit of a rummage today to see it he had any 'visitors' but he seems clear. There is a bald patch on his skin each side which doesn't show from outside, is that normal? It is totally covered by his plumage. I thought I would ask you all before we rush him off to the vet.

13yr. old male umbrella cockatoo,
we call him Amigo!

7yr. old Goffin cockatoo, she IS Sassy!!
I don't know about Amazons but I do know that my umbrella cockatoo has patches of skin, where feathers do not grow, and you wouldn't even know by just looking at him. When I pull back his feathers, especially around his neck and chest area, lots of baldness going on. My thoughts are, it's normal. The scratching afterwards may have been him putting his feathers back in place!

Thanks Mare Miller
we took Casper to the avian vet today to make sure he didn't have a skin infection before it gets too bad. I hate the look of balding parrots. The vet said he is healthy and that he might regrow the feathers after his next moult. He suggested that we use some Avix Soother spray to stop his itching.
He reckoned that Casper's weight is OK which is contrary to the previous vet. He also mentioned his preen gland. Now I didn't wish to contradict the learned gentleman but I was under the impression that Amazons did not have one. Casper seems confused as well because he takes a lot of care over his preening.
