I'm about the bring Kirby to my bird store to board him for a couple of days. I've done this twice before, but was wondering if its safe? They have a medium amount of parrots, but its really nice and clean and there are parrots that I have seen there for years that are still healthy. Its owned by two people.

I was just worried about transmittable diseases.

If you feel comfortable boarding Kirby there, it really must be your call, no matter what someone from this forum or other might say.

Having said that, your wondering about diseases is always a possibility and while most boarding facilities are normally pretty particular about the health of then birds they care for, I know of a boarding facility who took in a bird that did bring an infection and the bird's owner admitted afterward that she had no other option, but to leave her bird with the boarding facility and present a false/forged health certificate for the infected bird.

I also know the owner of a local bird shop who has not had any problems in the 10 years I've know her, however, I'm not sure I would ever board my birds...I have always been lucky to find a bird-sitter when I needed to be out of town.

In answer to your question, it is a 50 - 50 proposition.....good luck.....

If I had to board, I'm fortunate enough to live near the facility owned by my vet which is in a separate building from the hospital. They not only have strict protocol, they require recent blood tests of several viral diseases. My vet said in the many years he's had the boarding facility, there has never been a disease outbreak. He said he knows for a fact the other facilities and bird stores in the area can't say the same. They also use cubicle "cages" instead of cages for ease of more thorough sanitation.

Most likely your bird won't become infected from boarding, BUT it's hit or miss, as all it takes is just one infected bird... As weco said, it's your call. :)
