Let's talk about finding Avian Vets!

So, after joining the eastern canada avian association, I was told that in fact none of the vets that see birds here are actually registered. I found this hard to believe, as the two vets i've been to here were very competent and very good.

I was relieved to find this site here:

...and even happier to find out that the main vet I've been using, Suzette Dibblee in Halifax Nova Scotia, according to the AAV IS in fact certified! Maybe she only recently got her certification is my guess, but ironically she is the vet that is a 10 minute walk from our house too.

Just thought I would share this website for those of you looking for actual certified avian vets

Our most experienced bird vet in the entire area is not avian certified but everyone in birds here knows he's THE BEST to go to for anything avian specific, including surgery. He is mega experienced with birds and, I'm guessing, sees no need in being officially avian certified. Legally, as a licensed veterinarian he can treat birds anyway. I once took my new baby Rosebreasted cockatoo to the newest avian-certified vet in town since she visited my bird club to drum up business, only to be gravely disappointed in her experience and knowledge about birds, not to mention the trepidation she displayed when handling my bird. So, while it's an important tool in searching out a good bird vet, it's not THE only tool. Ask other hobbyists, like the local bird club and feed store.

There is a experienced AV in my area and I think a second one who also sees birds regularly. I have a very 'unpopular' opinion about seeing vets unnecessarily (which I shall not bring up because thats a debate I don't want to open), so we have yet to see her, and I hope we never will

One of the vets I go to is the same as you describe. Not certified, BUT is very experienced with birds, and I have been satisfied going to him over the years. He has a good reputation in the area among bird owners, and roughly 50% of his clientele is birds. He is also honest and won't pretend to know everything, and will tell you when he thinks you need to see a specialist.
