- RIP Hugo (African Brown Headed Parrot) 2 years old, lil Rosie May (Lovebird)
I took Rosie to the vet yesterday as I was getting worried about her sneezing and with my past history with Hugo I was very worried. I decided to take her to another vet who was recommended to me - I didnt want to use the vets I used with Hugo - clean start!
The vet was amazing - he treated Rosie with care and kindness and did a thorough check. That never happened with Hugo - they didnt even take him out of the cage!
Anyways, Im giving her promolt 5 for her synus and she is going to be fine.
The vet was very knowlegable and new his stuff. He told me the following and I thought I would share it with you (Linky suggested I share it). He firstly told me what to feed rosie and with the mix he prescibed and the promolt she will be one healthy gal
He then explained how birds contract diseases and because Hugo has been in the petshop for so long he had contracted an immuno virus and said it could of been wing and beak disease?? He then explained to me that disease can be spread through toys and food bought from petshops that house birds. Diseases can be spread through the dust from feathers and if the food/toys are stored near birds it can be carried home without the owning knowing it. He also explained that if a bird is sick no antibiotics may be administered without a blood test because it is difficult to prescribe the anitbiotics if your not sure what the bird has. A perfect example is Hugo who got anitbiotic after antibiotic which aided in killing him. I was not never told about the importance of blood tests - I trusted the vet.
From now on I will be buying all my stuff from the vetshop as they get all their products straight from the manufactorer. Im sure that if toys/food are bought from a shop where birds are kept they can be disinfected and wiped clean (bags of food) - double check with you vet.
