Friendly reminder; if you think something *might* be off with your bird, take them to the vet ASAP! Better safe than sorry. Sometimes even when acting immediately we can't save them, but often we can. I took Kono my Violet IRN to the vet yesterday because she just seemed a bit off. Eating, drinking, being active, but just not quite herself. Turns out she has a severe bacterial infection, a mild yeast infection, and was extremely dehydrated. All things she was masking. But because we took her in early, she was perked up with a dose of subcutaneous fluids, and sent home with medication for both infections and set to be seen again for blood tests if she isn't in tip top shape by Sunday. Repeat swabs to be done in 10 days.

And I have a new favorite vet :) my usual vet didn't have any appointments open soon enough to suit me, so I saw a new one at the same clinic and really liked her and think I will be using her in the future if possible.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
So glad Kono is on the mend, thanks to your perception AND actions. Hopefully she will soon be back to normal.

Thanks for posting yet another reminder of how critical it is to observe our fids daily appearance and activities. When in doubt, good medical care can often safe our fids.

I thought I had updated you before, but I guess I forgot! I took her BACK to the vet prior to my trip him from HI to SD, and found out that while her bacterial infection was still significant, it was not nearly as severe. Also, her yeast infection was completely cleared up! We switched at that time from Baytril to Clavomox for the antibiotic.

Josh, my husband, stepped up to the plate and learned how to give oral meds while I was in SD for my brother's wedding, and now that I am home we went to the vet again for a follow up. She has now seen THREE different vets, and none of them are my regular vet!

Today her gram stains are clear! She also has negative results for PBFD, Polyoma, and Psittacosis. We did a blood draw today for a CBC just to be on the safe side. Talk about traumatic for the parront; watching them take so much blood from such a tiny birdy; and they took it from her neck!

She looks a mess, and it's been a long road, but she is on the mend, getting her gumption back, and I am SO THANKFUL for our amazing vet clinic and all the vets who have taken such good care of my girl!

So good to hear that everything is coming along well. Im bringing Loco to the vet today and hope everything is clear but kind of suspect a little infection coming up, so well see but my fingers are crossed. I hate the idea of blood from birds.. Ive taken blood from humans many times but its so different with such a little bird! This is going to be my first time using this new vet too, since I moved, hopefully my experience is as good as yours!

So very happy to hear that all is on the mend!

We have maintained a relationship with two separate Clinics, both having an Avian qualified or certified Vet on staff. We have also convinced them of the advantage of maintaining a strong communication between their Clinic's assuring emergency support for their client base. Too their surprise, they found that over a dozen of their clients split obtaining services between the two Clinics.

Again, happy that all is well and that you have an excellent base of Vets to support you!

I'm so glad you acted so swiftly and got Kono to the vet in time!

Yeah, it's been a long road for poor Kono, but all for the best. Regarding the blood drawn from the neck, as I understand it parrots do not have a great deal of sensory nerves in that area. So with a vet skilled in blood draw, the trauma is less from the penetration of the needle than the rage at being restrained.

Please keep us updated on her bacterial infection.

Very glad you caught her illnesses early and she's on the mend!!! A lot of people just can't grasp how important it is to get birds to an avian vet ASAP when they seem even a little off. They are not like dogs and cats, and the vet cannot wait!

By the way, she is a beautiful bird! I absolutely love the color of violet Indian Ringnecks and violet Lovebirds...my cockatiel breeder (who I absolutely love, my female cockatiel is the sweetest bird I've ever seen) decided to adopt 2 breeding pairs of Indian Ringnecks this past summer that needed homes, and I told her the minute she has a violet hatch I want it! Just gorgeous, comical birds with very unique personalities.

Thanks so much for posting this and stressing the importance of getting birds to an avian vet the moment you feel something is off!

Thanks! She is actually quite special color; she is a Deep Dark double factor Violet =D she is the purplest bird I have ever seen!

Violets are what I'm more or less specializing in. I plan to produce Double factor deep (if possible to double factor this; still being tested), double factor dark, double factor Violets. I also have a deep Violet green, and a Violet green lovebird :)

A feeling. I often have "a bad feeling" about my birds before they show symptoms of being ill, and I have. Learned to go with my gut.

Soon after we took her in the first tie though she did start to show signs;
Weakeness
Abnormal feathers
Loss of appetite
Weight loss
General dull look

Oh my goodness, those baby pics! What beautiful birds you have! Topaz has to be the most uniquely colored bird I've ever seen! I love that very deep, dark purple color, that's definitely my next bird...

As of right now only two or three breeders in the US have deep birds, which is part of why I'm
So excited to be working with this mutation :)
