Weighing His Majesty

Wellllllllllllll, my perch-scale finally broke. Hey, it was only 25 years old! The Rickeybird was very used to it, and had no problem getting weighed... a pretty steady 250-260 grams.

I have tried a digital flat scale, an old mechanical postal scale, a new digital perch scale... the Rickeybird sees no merit in any of them, and flies away in indignation.

So... those of you with experience (or ideas) about weighing out-of-control parrots...

Some help, please?

I'm sure you tried to adapt the perch section of the scale to a new one? Most scales have an adjustment to account for "tare" weight. But His Majesty cannot be fooled as he instantly identified the new one as a secret weapon.

I've tried to fool some of mine by placing the scale in a pitch-dark room, then planting them on the scale. Works for a few, sometimes!

Hmmmm, sounds like the new scale did not follow the normal slow introduction into his area and likely made a quick dash into use, yes?

If true, have the scale make its long and slow intro to him Majesty's space.

Another way is to take the old scale apart and look at setting its shell around the new scale. Its a very long shot, but you never know.

If you have a table perch, it may be possible to set it on the scale and get his weight that way.

Based on history, you're going to have to do without knowing his weight until proper introductions have been completed. Based on his past history with new stuff, you will likely have to double it due to his current impressions of the new scale.

how accurate are your bathroom scales? Weigh yourself, then get Rickeybird to land on you and measure the difference

I would try to get one of those triangle three sided perches and put it on the scale and use the tare function. Loco thinks flat scales are lava but if theres a perch on it, no problem. Maybe put a chile on the perch?

Scott, I foolishly discarded the broken scale, not suspecting the new one would be a problem. What was I thinking. I WILL try the in-the-dark idea... good one!

Kentuckienne, I tried to fish it out of the garbage but it was already dumpstered, dang it.

Well, Sailboat, once again, I hope I have made any shy newcomers confident about asking "dumb" questions. No, I just set it out and tried to put him on it. It looks almost the same to ME! I will definitely set about a more gradual introduction. My face is so red right now.

Timmah, he's only about 9 ounces... our scales are not good enough, sadly.

Ah, Loco, the power of the chile... yes...

Okay, folks, y'all rock. I'm armed with stuff to try.
