Long story short, Ju's been bleeding from his toe for the past five hours. He's already anemic from breaking a blood feather a couple of weeks ago, and I can't get the bleeding to stop. I've tried cornstarch and stiptic powder, but he has a deep injury near his nail, and every time it bends slightly, it tears open and blood comes out. He's still eating, but I don't know how much longer he'll last. I can't get him to an avian vet until tomorrow.

Okay, so we didn't get the bleeding to stop, so we just put him back in his hospital cage. It's not bleeding too bad. He's still perky and he flew onto his swing before we turned the lights off.

Hope Ju got to the vet and is better now. Small parrots need quick attention when bleeding occurs - they ain't got much to begin with.

Luckily his bleeding finally stopped on its own this morning. It was spotting during the night, but now that his toe is covered in a huge glob of hardened blood, I haven't seen anymore blood.

Ju died this afternoon. He hadn't been doing well for the past couple of weeks, so I felt that maybe his body was shutting down. He'd been breathing heavily for the past couple of weeks (not due to an infection), and he's been having trouble balancing due to low blood sugar or something. He's had cancer for...five years now, I guess? He was around ten or eleven now, maybe even twelve. He always had weak lungs, ever since he was a boy. I think he was going to die soon either way regardless of his injury.

Yesterday was a horrible day, but today I saved a baby gull. We were in the Canadian Tire parking lot, when we spotted the fluffy little guy on his own, wandering around lost. He couldn't fly yet and still had a lot of down, and he was running towards the road. We hopped out of the car and speed walked with him for five minutes before we were able to corner him and I caught him.

He didn't have any injuries, but he wasn't ready to be on his own yet and the employees at the store refused to put him back up on the roof to be with the rest of the colony. Apparently several other babies had fallen off the roof this year, but nobody tried to help the babies so they all ended up getting hit by cars.

Anyways, we went home and got him some water in a syringe to drink (he was hungry and thirsty; he drank about 0.5 cc of water for me), then we drove forty minutes to the closest wildlife rescue. I had him in a box on my lap on the way there, and I stroked his neck and wrapped my hand around his back to keep him calm. He was adorable. He started nodding off a few times, but he was so interested in his surroundings that he kept waking up. You should have seen him looking around at everything. He was so curious.

Anyways, he's in good hands now, and they gave us his case number so we can get updates on his progress. I'd definitely love to volunteer there some time to help look after babies.
