Do some of you sleep with the birds cage door open? I've heard stories of the bird waking up people by walking on them and such, and this was normal for them.

RIP Pi - Sun Conure 02/06/11 - 09/10/11
Pi's cage door is closed but I have a grown cat and a baby kitten I'm weaning right now so I don't want to take any chances. During the day I leave it open and she can go in or out as she pleases. I think it would kind of neat to have the freedom to just let her do her thing all the time and even wake me up if she wanted to though. She does like to snuggle under the covers while I read a book in the afternoons so I can just see her trying to sleep with me on the bed. hehe

I leave it open unless I am asleep, or if an outside door is going to remain open for an extended period of time. I would like to leave the cage open at night, but since I got him I have been having recurring nightmares where I wake up with a crushed Bob in my bed; I worry enough about him with giving him extended periods of unsupervised freedom.

I've been considering bird proofing my room and leaving the top of the cage open for Cameron to roam my room only for the sake of his boredom.

The crushed bird as I sleep scares me as well so that something I'll have to look at of course as well.

Alex managed to get out of his old cage one night and into my bed. Woke up with him snoozing on my chest. However after that I made double sure he couldn't get out. It would have been so easy to have rolled over and squished him!

If he was a large, more robust bird I wouldn't mind as much, but it's to dangerous for a tiny thing like Alex. I do know a girl who's macaw sleeps on a stand right next to her bed though.

Lucy's cage is closed when I'm asleep. Otherwise it's open all day :) I bird-proofed my room :) but I don't want to take any chances crushing her. She wakes me up in the morning so I bring her out to snuggle for a bit before i get ready for work everyday

I don't really see the point. My bird generally stays glued to her sleeping perch from about an hour before I tuck her in until she wakes up. I never leave her cage door open when I leave the house, take a shower, go to sleep, or do anything that keeps her out of my sight for more than a few minutes. She's not really the adventurous type so I could probably leave all the windows and doors open and build open fires in my living room without her ever getting into trouble, but you can never be sure.

I do have two cats -Riply & Nano bites-
four snakes- china, dip & stick, and Grand Chahee-
My sisters a vet tech, she speaks of a man she knows, who lets his macaw sleep in bed with him. The bird has its own pillow, and from the story I got, I understand that this bird is male, the man, from what I understand, is single now, I dont know if he had ever been married, but he loves his bird. I guess this has been happening from day one, some 30 years ago now. (hard to immagian he had a girlfriend, or wife)

Nope! Would never leave Calli to roam free and unattended at night... not that he would during the hours of darkness. We are also owned by a large, beautiful husky called Gaelan. Given half a chance, I'm pretty sure Gaelan would snack out on Calli, so no way would I ever take the chance.
