The kids got the right heart behind it, but they should have anticipated college etc, when getting the bird in the first place. They should really get teir head around the idea that they may have to give their baby up permenantly. I know if I took it I'd let him/her visit whenever they wanted... but I wouldn't be giving the bird back - "a couple of years" means both me and my birds would probably get bonded with it, it'd cause heartache all round just to give him back.
Also, imagine those without any other birds, then having this GCC for a few years then having to give up what is likely to become their 'baby'.

I was wanting a caqiue ever since I saw them at age 15, but I knew I would be going to college one day, so I got a bearded dragon instead. Where I live, most colleges require you to live in dorms for your first year so they can leach as much money off of you as possible. So last year, I reluctantly lived in the over priced dorm and traded my bearded dragon for a saltwater tank since only fish were allowed. I'm one of those people that need at least some kind of pet!
Last summer, I sold my saltwater tank, which I sold for more than I bought it for. It helped paid for my two caiques and now I am living off campus with them and my boyfriend of 2 years I couldn't be happier!

This student might luck up and find some one willing to foster this bird. I would be happy to foster it but they would agree to pay for food and all vet care the bird may need. Fostering can open a door to a bird lover to enjoy having a bird when they could not afford one. It would also be keeping the bird so the owner doesn't have to rehome it. Offering to help other bird lovers during times of need can help many birds get to keep their family.It might be a week or a year or so but if you was in the place of loseing your home or going to school wouldn"t you like to know the help is there?

I also live off campus... I had to give up my ferrets when I went to college, but I gave them up to my sister so it didn't really count. We'd worked it out when I first got them that she'd take them when I left for school. I kept my beardies in my dorm with me (hid them under the bed haha had a sweet set up for their lamps too). And now I live off campus with my fish, beardie, and 2 birds. It's all in planning. I feel for the kid but there's no excuse. Maybe his parents' should take responsibility since they let the bird in their home?

The original post was removed from Craigslist. I encourage people all the time to research before adopting ANY pet, and consider their lifespans and regard it as a long-term commitment.
