This program, we've had recorded for awhile, it's about the wild parrots that live in Australia. My husband and I just got around to viewing it last night.

Fascinating! I learned so much about these birds that I would never had known. I believe that by viewing our birds in there natural habitat, we can understand, a little more, why they act as they do in our homes.

If you can get ahold of it, it's so worth seeing! It's on the Nature channel, called,,Parrots in the Land of Oz. I have "dish" satellite tv and the original air date: 01/27/08. Episode: 381.

The eclectus were truly fascinating! Amazing cockatoos and parakeets. Didn't notice any umbrellas, (my husband thinks that they had to have been exterminated), and sulphur-crested 'toos, EVERYWHERE!

Umbrellas aren't native to Australia, neither is the Moluccan nor the Goffin.

Glad you enjoyed watching our parrots...

Ohh! Will try and find this to watch. I also love watching nature programs, especially bird ones. David Attenbourgh has done a few and there was another one fairly recently which I can't quite remember.... will try and recall it for you :)

That's a great program. I thought it was PBS; it's been awhile. I have the dvr programmed to look for parrot in the subject or title.

Paulie is a fun movie, btw. Cheech is in it, but not his old self.

I didn't know that Lene! Those suffer-crested 'toos were like locusts, the way they will move onto a farm field, with hundreds of them in a flock,,Yikes!!

Yeah. Umbrellas (Cacatua alba) are from some of the islands of Indonesia (can't remember which), Moluccan (Cacatua moluccensis) are from South Moluccas in eastern Indonesia (hence, the name) and the Goffins/Tanimbar Corella (Cacatua goffiniana) are from the Tanimbar Islands archipelago, also in Indonesia.

^ I only remember the latter two because their names match the places. :D

I'm going to have to check out this documentary. The most recent one I watched (regarding birds) was "Earthflight". Rather enjoyable. :) I thought it was so cool in the macaw one where the scarlet macaws remembered their caretaker even after they had been released for several months. :D

Mm, it's very sad. Farmers get very... well... yeah, when 'toos descend on their crops. =\

Some farmers have even been given "permits" to shoot our native Red-Tail Black Cockatoos (along with other cockatoos); which PSOA (Parrot Society of Australia) was very, (and understandably so!) outspoken about.

Environmental Ministers response:

"In striving to achieve a sensible balance between the protection of native wildlife and successful cropping at Lakeland, the Department has consulted widely with wildlife authorities and special-ists throughout Australia in seeking to identify appropriate methods to minimise crop damage by Red-tailed Black Cockatoos without impacting on the viability of the birds in the wild. This year the Department has, using its own funds, trialed a number of different techniques to minimise the damage caused to crops in the Lakeland area by Red-tailed Black Cockatoos. These included a range of harassment techniques. In addition, as part of the trial, the Department issued permits allowing a few farmers to shoot a limited number of the birds (e.g. scout birds) on their properties.

I am advised by Departmental staff who closely monitored the trial that the farmers took a very responsible approach to the issue and shot only scout birds when they felt there was no other alternative to protect their crops."

I can understand the need to protect crops, but surely there are better ways than shooting our native wildlife...
