Hello,
I had posted a few weeks ago about a plucked parrot at a thrift store. My mother in law sent me a picture of him today. Can someone tell me what kind of parrot he/she is?

Thanks!
Reading up on their diets. This poor guy is not being fed what he needs. The owner was not at the store while my mother in law was there but the guy working said" if it wasn't for me, he would never get fed" meanwhile he goes and gets him a Ritz cracker and chocolate chip cookie to eat.

Poor little guy! Is your mother in law interested in a bird? Maybe ask the owner if he is looking to rehome in a nice subtle way?

I'm willing to take him if the owner will give him up. The junk store he is in is located in Dothan, Al. My mother in law visits her daughter in Dothan. Every time she visits she goes and checks on the poor guy. She's going to ask the owner if he's willing to sell him. I'm afraid he won't though. She has told me about him for a couple of months but this is the first photo I've seen of him. Sad thing is the owner probably thinks he's taking care of him. If he's not willing to part. I wonder if I at least sent some toys to him if he would hang them in his cage. The little guy has no toys.

Dear god! Do these people not realize these are nectar eaters?!

That crosses the line to animal cruelty in my book. They are starving this poor creature to death!!!

I know, I'm so sad for this little one. But I'm trying to save him.

Good luck and thanks for trying, happy410. If you and your mom fail to convince the store owner to let you have or buy this poor little guy, perhaps it would be a good idea to direct the owner to this forum or other resources so he can learn how to properly feed and take care of this beautiful creature. Like you said, he probably thinks he is actually taking care of him. Educating the owner can be another way to help the bird. Good luck and please let us know what ends up happening.

If they won't willingly give him up or improve the bird's care, I'd think about going to the local police/animal protection society.

There's a reason you don't feed lorikeets hard food - it shreds the delicate papillae on their tongue.

Bad news guys! The owner is not willing to give up parrot. My sister in law took some video of him. The poor guy is plucked all over his back also. Now on to the next step of trying to find a rescue group in that area that may can help. Any suggestions are welcomed.

After 4 calls to different groups, I finally was able to talk to someone who was willing to help. She is going over to check on him and either call animal control if necessary or try to educate the owner about proper care. Fingers crossed everything turns out well.

HE'S MINE, AND I CAN TORTURE HIM TO DEATH IF I WANNA!!!

GGGGRRRRRRRRRR!!!! SOMETIMES I JUST HATE PEOPLE!!!!

Seriously, if you're not even going to bother to feed it correctly? And you are slowly killing this bird... WHY?!

I contacted the lady today that is trying to help this parrot. She said she went to check on him and to try to get the owner to give him up. She wants to go slow with this guy because she's afraid he will take the bird elsewhere and she won't be able to check on him. She said he was a unique person and is not the type to handle confrontation well.
She did place a call to animal services but no return call yet. But she doesn't feel like there are enough grounds for them to take him away. She feels it will be best for her to try to get him to surrender the bird. She mentioned the guy was trying his best to keep her away from the bird.
It's not the best news, but at least I know there is a chance for this little guy to get a better life. Keep fingers crossed for him.

I commend you for trying so hard! Poor bird :( Sometimes the hardest part of rescue is knowing you can't save an animal in need. It sounds like this may be one of those situations, there isn't quite enough obvious abuse for animal control to get involved I'm sure. It's worse when it's a parrot, especially a lory with a specialized diet, because the general public has no idea what condition this bird is in or how much it is suffering. Heck around here the animal has to be physically threatening someone for animal control to lift a finger most of the time... extremely frustrating.

Just wanted to give quick update. The last two visits checking on this little one he had fruit in his dish. My mother in law went today and said he looked much better. Getting feathers back and he looked alot happier. Maybe the owner just wasn't aware of his needs. I'm glad that I was able to at least make his life alittle better.

I wonder if the person you contacted got him to feed t he little guy nectar as well. Maybe, since he's growing feathers back. Something to take in mind, many times people think they are "spoiling" their animals by giving them what they themselves like..oreo cookies and tv awesome! Especially so if they get them from someone who didn't know or care either.

If the guy really likes the little bird, perhaps education is the best thing. My husband, I pretty much have to say junk food is poison to keep him from giving it out to all the critters. The only ones he's allowed to share his junky snacks with is the rats and I have been training him that nothing larger than their head, and no more than a few times a week. otherwise if you want to give them a huge treat...give them a piece of broccoli, they love it just it was candy.

Hoping for a success with this little guy and his owner too.
