Horizontal cages?

I'm already on the lookout for a cage upgrade for my GCC Mishka. It isn't so much that the one I got her is too small, I just want her to have more room to move around.

What I'd really like is a longer cage, one where she can go farther horizontally than vertically. Most of what I see though go straight up, or if I do find something with the right dimensions it has 1" bar spacing (I'd prefer 1/2" as it's for my conure), etc. *sigh*

Anyone have any recommendations? I'd like to say price is no option but would prefer to be a bit budget minded. Are there any customize-your-cage makers out there? My boyfriend says he can make one but then I'd worry about metal poisoning, sharp corners etc. Any thoughts?

I always suggest looking on places like Craigs List, ebay classifieds (not to be confused with the ebay auction site) or other local classified ads, in just the last few months I got two "like new" macaw size cages from different people off craigs list, both for about $100 ea.(retail $600-$800), deals are out there all the time, just a suggestion tho, if you do find a used cage, bring it home and thoroughly wash and sanitize it and allow it to dry in the sun before placing your bird in it, most food and water bowls are dishwasher safe, and you can always replace perches if you don't feel comfortable reusing them.

Our "system " is rather strange
We have 3 cages for our conures. One is in our bedroom. This room is where we also spend most evenings post dinner as both my spouse and I have desks (often a teen at work at one of them) as well as a sitting area where people tend to hang out or read. Also there is a cage for Merry and Teechka, the keets. This is a solid rather small Conure size cage that I bought new and honestly paid too much for. Then during the day the conures can go to a tall toy loaded cage we call the outside cage...although in Missouri the weather is such that for much of the year outside is no farther than a bathroom with a good sized skylight. This cage is a bit too tall and heavy to be moved easily by me although I can do it in a pinch. It cost 10 USD at a garage sale and then we put about 50USD into that to fix it up. Finally we have a rectangular one with close bars so it is keet safe too that we use a lot because it is light and easy to move and can easily accommodate toys and yet can follow us from place to place so birds can be with us. It usually sits in the kitchen as that is an activity center in our house but it often ends up in one of the kids' rooms. It also was cheap when I got it some years ago because I was concerned about some flaking paint in the cage of a CAG I was fostering. SO I share all this because even a very expensive big cage can get boring. My guys love to discover where they are hanging out each day a bit different. Some parrots would absolutely hate the uncertainty but my gang are always on the lookout for the next new adventure. It's a conure thing...

I bought a huuuuuuge cage from Ebay for Cal.

It's the same make as my other cages - ferplast and came with a load of free toys because the AG the people had was scared of said toys lol.

The cage is in brilliant condition and after a scrubbing, hosing down, scrubbing, hosing down & disinfecting the toys and bowls I felt she could try it. Basically, Cal uses it as her play mobile atm lol. But I don't mind....why? It was £23.51. Which I think is about $50? lol. The bar spacing is just below the inch which is great for Cal as she's growing up big and strong and it doesn't damage her tail feathers.

It's worth keeping an eye out!

I think what Von and I are trying to say is you don't have to sink a ton of money into a cage if you have time to look around for a bargain.

I thought it was weird that Cal had 2 cages, one for the shop and sleep (her choice just now) and one to play in when she feels like it.

If you have the room then it's brilliant for them to have the choice. I think Cal will always prefer her smaller cage tbh but she's like Tarzan with all those toys on the big one!!!

That sounds perfectly reasonable. I hadn't thought about multiple cages - I like the idea, especially getting them (cheap) off eBay. I'm leery about 1" wide bars for my green-cheek though because she's so very small.

I don't know if you are still looking or if you've already got your cage, but I'd be very leary of the cages off eBay. Well, if it's a no name brand anyway. But I did want to suggest this cage because it fits your description of being plenty wide when you take the middle divider out and it's the 1/2" bar spacing.
